Using census data, she tests three models of attainment: a human and social capital model, a local labor market model, and a model combining human capital and local labor market indicators against a baseline ethnic heritage model. She finds a double hierarchy of inequality. Asian and Hispanic immigrants are lower on socio-economic scales than foreign-born non-Hispanic whites, but Asians have higher earnings than Latinos. Ethnic differences on human and social capital factors and local labor market indicators explain the variation in socioeconomic attainments and contribute to differences in immigrant attainments. However, foreign-born non-Hispanic whites retain an advantage over the other groups even after differences in human and social capital and local labor market conditions are eliminated.New Americans (LFB Scholarly Publishing LLC)Foreign workersUnited StatesImmigrantsUnited StatesEconomic conditionsForeign workersImmigrantsEconomic conditions.331.6/2/0973Karas Jennifer1872288MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910955528203321Bridges and barriers4481402UNINA03813nam 2200745Ia 450 991096698240332120251116175328.01-138-99072-81-134-39036-X1-280-07841-30-203-40105-010.4324/9780203401057 (CKB)1000000000249210(EBL)200304(OCoLC)56573405(SSID)ssj0000388987(PQKBManifestationID)11274110(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000388987(PQKBWorkID)10443778(PQKB)11776033(MiAaPQ)EBC200304(Au-PeEL)EBL200304(CaPaEBR)ebr10093582(CaONFJC)MIL7841(PPN)198459491(EXLCZ)99100000000024921020030925d2004 uy 0engur|n|---|||||txtccrDiaspora, identity, and religion new directions in theory and research /edited by Waltraud Kokot, Khachig Tololyan and Carolin AlfonsoLondon ;New York, NY Routledge20041 online resource (222 p.)Routledge Research in TransnationalismDescription based upon print version of record.0-203-35105-3 0-415-30991-3 Includes bibliographical references and index.Book Cover; Title; Contents; List of contributors; Introduction; Deconstructing and comparing diasporas; Politics, history and locality; 'Too close for comfort': re-membering the forgotten diaspora of Irish women in England; Place, movement and identity: processes of inclusion and exclusion in a 'Caribbean' family; Why locality matters: diaspora consciousness and sedentariness in the Armenian diaspora in Greece; Past and present in the history of modern Greek diaspora; Griots, roots and identity in the African diasporaThe invention of history in the Irish-American diaspora: myths of the Great FamineDiasporic aspects of religion; Religion or culture?
