It is shown that such "regulatory capture" in banking does not imply ineffectual regulation; a "captured" regulator may impose very tight, costly prudential requirements to reduce negative spillovers of risk-taking by weaker banks. In these circumstances, differences in the regulatory regime across jurisdictions may persist because each adapts its regulations to suit its dominant incumbent institutions.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2006/034Banks and bankingState supervisionFinancial institutionsState supervisionAsset requirementsimfBank regulationimfBankingimfBanks and BankingimfBanks and bankingimfBanksimfBusiness and FinancialimfCapital adequacy requirementsimfCrisis managementimfDeposit insuranceimfDepository InstitutionsimfEconomic & financial crises & disastersimfFinancial Institutions and Services: Government Policy and RegulationimfFinancial regulation and supervisionimfFinancial Risk ManagementimfFinancial services industryimfFinancial services law & regulationimfGeneral Financial Markets: Government Policy and RegulationimfLaw and legislationimfMicro Finance InstitutionsimfMortgagesimfState supervisionimfUnited StatesimfBanks and bankingState supervision.Financial institutionsState supervision.Asset requirementsBank regulationBankingBanks and BankingBanks and bankingBanksBusiness and FinancialCapital adequacy requirementsCrisis managementDeposit insuranceDepository InstitutionsEconomic & financial crises & disastersFinancial Institutions and Services: Government Policy and RegulationFinancial regulation and supervisionFinancial Risk ManagementFinancial services industryFinancial services law & regulationGeneral Financial Markets: Government Policy and RegulationLaw and legislationMicro Finance InstitutionsMortgagesState supervisionInternational Monetary Fund.Monetary and Financial Systems Dept.DcWaIMFBOOK9910955017903321Regulatory Capture in Banking4371735UNINA
