Since the body of critical studies on women's writing for the most part prioritizes print over manuscript, this essay collection provides an essential corrective. The essays in this volume discuss many of the ways in which women participated in early modern manuscript culture. The manuscripts studied by the contributors originated in a wide range of different milieux, including the royal Court, the universities, gentry and aristocratic households in England and Ireland, and French convents. Their contents are similarly varied: original and transcribed secular and devotional verse, religious meditations, letters, moral precepts in French and English, and recipes are among the genres represented. Emphasizing the manuscripts' social, political and religious contexts, the contributors challenge commonly held notions about women's writing in English in the early modern period, and bring to light many women whose work has not been considered before.English literatureEarly modern, 1500-1700History and criticismWomen and literatureGreat BritainHistory16th centuryWomen and literatureGreat BritainHistory17th centuryGreat BritainIntellectual life16th centuryEnglish literatureHistory and criticism.Women and literatureHistoryWomen and literatureHistory820.9/9287/09031Burke Victoria E(Victoria Elizabeth)1860830Gibson Jonathan1965-1860831MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910966553103321Early modern women's manuscript writing4466733UNINA01301nas 2200421 c 450 991089363340332120260218112018.0(CKB)5280000000201802(DE-599)ZDB2848168-9(DE-101)1084610000(DE-599)2848168-9(EXLCZ)99528000000020180220160229b20122012 |y |gerur|||||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrier˜Dasœ Thüringer FähnleinMonatshefte für die mitteldeutsche HeimatJenaThüringer Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek2012Online-RessourceReproduktionThüringer Fähnlein, Das Landeskunde(DE-588)4073972-7https://d-nb.info/gnd/4073972-7(DE-101)040739724gndZeitschrift(DE-588)4067488-5https://d-nb.info/gnd/4067488-5(DE-101)040674886gndThüringengndZeitschriftgnd-contentLandeskunde.Zeitschrift.0609400027DE-1019999JOURNAL9910893633403321Thüringer Fähnlein4236069UNINA
