Although in scope and organization their ideas are clearly rooted in the Peripatetic tradition, their meteorology sets itself apart from this tradition by its systematic use of multiple explanations and its sole reliance on sensory evidence as opposed to mathematics and other axiomatic principles. Namhafte Rezensenten führen das auf die hohe Texttreue zurück. Für die Beurteilung einer Übersetzung ist die kausale Verknüpfung von „texttreu“ und „schwer lesbar“ jedoch untauglich. Jutta Seeger-Vollmer geht der Frage nach, warum sie dennoch nach wie vor anzutreffen ist. Sie bezieht sich dabei auf die von Katharina Reiß aufgestellten Kriterien für eine sachgemäße Beurteilung von Übersetzungen. In ihrer Übersetzungskritik weist sie mit circa 700 Beispielen nach, dass Rathjens Übersetzung schwer lesbar, jedoch keineswegs texttreu ist und zudem sehr viele Fehler aufweist. Darüber hinaus würdigt sie die hierzulande wenig beachteten sprachlichen Besonderheiten des Moby-Dick und die damit verbundene Sonderstellung dieses Werkes in der amerikanischen Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts.Biographical note: Jutta Seeger-Vollmer ist Dipl.-Übersetzerin (Universität Heidelberg) und war für die Berliner Gerichte und Notare allgemein beeidigte Dolmetscherin für Spanisch und Englisch.
