Savoyard par ses origines, Seyssel vit à la charnière de deux mondes, la France et l’Italie, et de deux cultures. Élève et admirateur des humanistes de la Péninsule, il s’intéresse à l’Antiquité et à la redécouverte des historiens grecs. Leurs récits de conflits, de guerres civiles et de conquêtes peuvent fournir, selon lui, des enseignements aux princes de son temps. C’est sur ces bases que l’évêque de Marseille devient le premier théoricien politique français moderne, avec sa grande œuvre, La Monarchie de France, rédigée en 1515, et strictement contemporaine du Prince de Machiavel et de l’Utopie de More. Penseur de premier plan, Seyssel fut aussi diplomate, épistolier, traducteur, historien, juriste et théologien. Et pourtant, aucune monographie ne lui a jamais été consacrée en France jusqu’au présent ouvrage. Les études réunies ici, signées des meilleurs spécialistes actuels, se penchent sur son itinéraire et sa pensée, en rendant accessibles des textes et des images rarement étudiés. Elles entendent remettre au jour une pensée profondément originale et injustement oubliée.
