Maison sans archives, l’entreprise Mame était par ailleurs disqualifiée par la nature de sa double spécialisation : l’édition religieuse et l’édition pour la jeunesse. Ce livre, issu du travail d’une équipe composée à parité de littéraires, d’historiens et d’historiens de l’art, s’attache à reconstituer l’histoire de l’entreprise et de la dynastie qui l’a portée, de ses débuts à Angers en 1767 à la rupture du lien entre la famille Mame et l’entreprise qui porte son nom en 1975. À travers 200 ans d’histoire économique et sociale, enracinée en Touraine mais largement ouverte aux influences majeures que connaît alors l’édition, l’ouvrage cherche à déterminer la nature de cette littérature produite pour les enfants des années 1830 à l’après-guerre, à expliquer le dédain dont elle fait l’objet dès les années Ferry, ainsi que l’oubli dont elle pâtit depuis, quoique ses tirages la rendent présente dans la plupart des foyers français. Il tente notamment de comprendre dans quel contexte et sous quelles modalités est née cette littérature chrétienne pour la jeunesse, et comment elle s’est développée, échappant partiellement aux objectifs de ses fondateurs.
