Il nuovo pontefice, tuttavia, riuscì subito a conquistare la simpatia di molti e soprattutto contribuì a restituire, in particolare ai giovani, la fierezza di professarsi cattolici. Il mondo era allora ancora nell'epoca della Guerra fredda, che vedeva la contrapposizione fra i due blocchi rappresentati dal mondo comunista e da quello occidentale. La Chiesa del silenzio, privata della libertà nei Paesi comunisti, adesso aveva chi parlava per lei e Giovanni Paolo II contribuì in modo importante alla caduta del Muro di Berlino, nel 1989, che di fatto segnò l'inizio della fine del socialismo reale. Nella seconda parte del pontificato, dal 1989 al 2005, avrebbe concentrato l'azione della Chiesa nella nuova evangelizzazione, per restituire la speranza sia ai popoli "sazi e disperati" dell'Occidente, sia a quelli che uscivano dalla tragedia dell'esperienza del totalitarismo.
