(2001-05) -- Forward to the past (2006-beyond).Since the mid-1950s, successive Canadian governments have grappled with the issue of Canada's role in US ballistic missile defence programs. Until Paul Martin's government finally said no, policy-makers responded to US initiatives with fear and uncertainty as they endlessly debated the implications at home and abroad of participation. However, whether this is the end of the story remains to be seen. Drawing on previously classified government documents and interviews with senior officials, James Fergusson examines Canada's policy deliberations during five major US initiatives. He reveals that a combination of factors such as weak leadership and a tendency to place uncertain and ill-defined notions of international peace and security before national defence resulted in indecision on what role Canada would play in ballistic missile defence. In effect, policy-makers have failed to transform debates about the issue into an opportunity to define Canada's strategic interests at home and on the world stage. Canada and Ballistic Missile Defense is the first comprehensive account of Canada's response and indecision regarding US ballistic missile defence initiatives, and the implications of this inaction.Ballistic missile defensesCanadaHistoryNational securityCanadaHistoryCanadaMilitary policyCanadaPolitics and government20th centuryCanadaPolitics and government21st centuryCanadaMilitary relationsUnited StatesUnited StatesMilitary relationsCanadaBallistic missile defensesHistory.National securityHistory.358.1/740971Fergusson James G(James Gordon),1954-1669504MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910821383503321Canada and ballistic missile defence, 1954-20094030707UNINA04227nam 22006735 450 991029834630332120200701080910.03-319-08162-410.1007/978-3-319-08162-5(CKB)3710000000261984(EBL)1967221(OCoLC)896834353(SSID)ssj0001372161(PQKBManifestationID)11753108(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001372161(PQKBWorkID)11301529(PQKB)10959862(MiAaPQ)EBC1967221(DE-He213)978-3-319-08162-5(PPN)182096580(EXLCZ)99371000000026198420141013d2014 u| 0engur|n|---|||||txtccrmiRNAs and Target Genes in Breast Cancer Metastasis /by Seema Sethi1st ed. 2014.Cham :Springer International Publishing :Imprint: Springer,2014.1 online resource (83 p.)SpringerBriefs in Cancer Research,2194-1173Description based upon print version of record.3-319-08161-6 Includes bibliographical references at the end of each chapters and index.Role of miRNAs and their Target Genes in Breast Cancer Metastasis -- Molecular Pathogenesis of Breast Cancer and the Role of MicroRNAs -- Epidemiology, Risk Factors, Treatment and Prevention of Breast Cancer Metastases -- Clinical Perspectives: Breast Cancer Brain Metastasis -- Molecular targeted therapy for brain metastatic breast cancers: Current Updates. This SpringerBrief gives the latest research on the role of miRNAs in breast cancer metastasis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are recently described small endogenous noncoding RNAs implicated in the posttranscriptional control of gene expression. These tiny molecules are involved in developmental, physiologic phenomenon as well as pathologic processes including cancers. In fact, miRNAs have emerged as critical regulators of cancer progression, invasion and metastasis. This is mainly because a single miRNA can affect several downstream genes and signaling pathways with oncogenic or tumor suppressor actions depending on the target genes affected. Due to this multimodal downstream signaling effects, these small endogenous molecules hold great promise in metastasis prevention and treatment. Modulating the activity of miRNAs can provide opportunities for novel cancer interventions. Targeting miRNAs could become a novel prognostic and therapeutic strategy to prevent the future development of metastasis. Thus, miRNAs could also serve as a potential targets for anti-metastatic therapy. The book explores how the expression of miRNAs in the primary tumor could be silenced using antagomirs (chemically modified anti-miRNA oligonucleotides), which could prevent the development of metastasis; whereas once metastasis develops then it could be treated with miRNA mimics for inducing its expression for the treatment. Therefore, development of miRNA-based prophylactic therapies could serve as precision and personalized medicine against future development of metastasis of breast and other cancers.SpringerBriefs in Cancer Research,2194-1173CancerResearchGene expressionOncologyCancer Researchhttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/B11001Gene Expressionhttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/B12010Oncologyhttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/H33160CancerResearch.Gene expression.Oncology.Cancer Research.Gene Expression.Oncology.610611.01816614.5999616994Sethi Seemaauthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut1064622BOOK9910298346303321MiRNAs and Target Genes in Breast Cancer Metastasis2539481UNINA
