Using rich new untapped archives, States of Delinquency is the first book to explore the experiences of young Mexican Americans, African Americans, and ethnic Euro-Americans in California correctional facilities including Whittier State School for Boys and the Preston School of Industry. Miroslava Chávez-García examines the ideologies and practices used by state institutions as they began to replace families and communities in punishing youth, and explores the application of science and pseudo-scientific research in the disproportionate classification of youths of color as degenerate. She also shows how these boys and girls, and their families, resisted increasingly harsh treatment and various kinds of abuse, including sterilization.American CrossroadsCrime and race - California - HistoryCrime and race -- California -- HistoryEugenics - California - HistoryEugenics -- California -- HistoryJuvenile delinquents - California - HistoryJuvenile delinquents -- California -- HistoryJuvenile justice, Administration of - California - HistoryMinority youth - California - HistoryMinority youth -- California -- HistoryPreston School of Industry (Ione, Calif.)Preston School of Industry (Ione, Calif.)Whittier State School (Whittier, Calif.)Whittier State School (Whittier, Calif.)Juvenile justice, Administration ofHistoryCaliforniaMinority youthHistoryCaliforniaJuvenile delinquentsHistoryCaliforniaCrime and raceHistoryCaliforniaEugenicsHistoryCaliforniaSocial Welfare & Social WorkHILCCSocial SciencesHILCCCriminology, Penology & Juvenile DelinquencyHILCC19th century california.19th century crime.20th century california.20th century crime.african americans and justice system.american criminal system.california history.crime and juveniles.crime and punishment.crime and racism.crime and sociology.crime.criminal investigation.criminology.juvenile crime.juvenile justice system.juveniles and punishment.mexican americans and crime.preston school of industry.racism in justice system.western us history.whittier state school for boys.Crime and race - California - History.Crime and race -- California -- History.Eugenics - California - History.Eugenics -- California -- History.Juvenile delinquents - California - History.Juvenile delinquents -- California -- History.Juvenile justice, Administration of - California - History.Minority youth - California - History.Minority youth -- California -- History.Preston School of Industry (Ione, Calif.).Preston School of Industry (Ione, Calif.).Whittier State School (Whittier, Calif.).Whittier State School (Whittier, Calif.).Juvenile justice, Administration ofHistoryMinority youthHistoryJuvenile delinquentsHistoryCrime and raceHistoryEugenicsHistorySocial Welfare & Social WorkSocial SciencesCriminology, Penology & Juvenile Delinquency364.3609794Chavez-Garcia Miroslava, authttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut1478802DE-B1597DE-B1597BOOK9910779085103321States of Delinquency3694610UNINA04206nam 2200685 450 991081682900332120230207213816.01-282-88180-997866128818000-85771-108-31-4416-7950-2600-00-4379-1(CKB)2670000000047702(EBL)676773(OCoLC)710975679(SSID)ssj0000413206(PQKBManifestationID)12121384(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000413206(PQKBWorkID)10369740(PQKB)11232844(MiAaPQ)EBC676773(Au-PeEL)EBL676773(CaONFJC)MIL288180(EXLCZ)99267000000004770220151029d2010 uy| 0engur|n|---|||||txtccrBritain's first Muslims portrait of an Arab community /Fred HallidayNew paperback edition.London :I.B. Yet little is known about Britain's first Muslims, the Yemenis. Yemenis began settling in British port towns at the beginning of the 20th century, and afterwards became part of the immigrant labour force in Britain's industrial cities. Fred Halliday's ground-breaking research, based in Yemen and Britain, provides a fascinating case study for understanding the dynamics of immigrant cultures and the complexities of 'Muslim' idenYemenisGreat BritainHistoryMuslimsGreat BritainHistoryYemenisGreat BritainSocial conditionsMuslimsGreat BritainSocial conditionsGreat BritainEthnic relationsHistoryYemenisHistory.MuslimsHistory.YemenisSocial conditions.MuslimsSocial conditions.305.6970941Halliday Fred250441Halliday Fred250441MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910816829003321Britain's first Muslims4084610UNINA
