INTRODUCTION""; ""II. STYLIZED FACTS ABOUT GROWTH IN INDIA""; ""III. DO POLICIES MATTER?""; ""IV. CONCLUSION""; ""REFERENCES""This paper examines how growth has varied across India's states. It finds that (i) the income gap between rich and poor states has widened; (ii) rich and faster-growing states have been more effective in reducing poverty; (iii) poor and slower-growing states have had little success in generating private sector jobs; (iv) labor and capital flows do little to close income gaps; and (v) the volatility in economic growth is greatest in poor states. Differences in states' policies affect the cross-state pattern of growth. Greater private sector investment, smaller governments, and better institutions are found to have a positive impact on growth.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2006/103Economic developmentEconometric modelsLaborimfMacroeconomicsimfSocial Services and WelfareimfPoverty and HomelessnessimfPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their DistributionsimfGovernment PolicyimfProvision and Effects of Welfare ProgramimfLabor Economics: GeneralimfEmploymentimfUnemploymentimfWagesimfIntergenerational Income DistributionimfAggregate Human CapitalimfAggregate Labor ProductivityimfWelfare, Well-Being, and Poverty: GeneralimfLabourimfincome economicsimfSocial welfare & social servicesimfPoverty & precarityimfPersonal incomeimfPoverty reductionimfPovertyimfIncomeimfLabor economicsimfEconomic theoryimfIndiaEconomic policyIndiaimfEconomic developmentEconometric models.LaborMacroeconomicsSocial Services and WelfarePoverty and HomelessnessPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their DistributionsGovernment PolicyProvision and Effects of Welfare ProgramLabor Economics: GeneralEmploymentUnemploymentWagesIntergenerational Income DistributionAggregate Human CapitalAggregate Labor ProductivityWelfare, Well-Being, and Poverty: GeneralLabourincome economicsSocial welfare & social servicesPoverty & precarityPersonal incomePoverty reductionPovertyIncomeLabor economicsEconomic theoryPurfield Catriona1601444International Monetary Fund.Asia and Pacific Dept.DcWaIMFBOOK9910816282003321Mind the Gap—Is Economic Growth in India Leaving Some States Behind4122212UNINA
