Combining field data gathered through a series of detailed interviews with available classroom observations, the study focuses on six adolescents from different ethnic and social backgrounds as they negotiate the learning of English against the backdrop of multilingual Singapore. This book provides social explanations for the difficulties and challenges these adolescents face by drawing on current developments in sociolinguistics, literacy studies, English language teaching and language policy.Critical language and literacy studiesEnglish languageStudy and teachingForeign speakersSingaporeNative language and educationSingaporeMultilingualismSingaporeEnglishHILCCLanguages & LiteraturesHILCCEnglish LanguageHILCCBourdieu.English language teaching.ethnography of communication.language issues in Singapore.language policy.linguistic identity.literacy and identity.literacy practices in Singapore.multilingual Singapore.sociolinguistics.English languageStudy and teachingForeign speakersNative language and educationMultilingualismEnglishLanguages & LiteraturesEnglish Language427/.95957Stroud Christopher, authttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut952108Wee Lionel, authttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/autDE-B1597DE-B1597BOOK9910815245203321Style, Identity and Literacy4072806UNINA
