Contributions cover his Huguenot heritage and later influence on the French antislavery movement (which had never been explored as thoroughly before) as well as his Quaker faith and connections with the Quaker community in the British Atlantic world (in the North American colonies as well as in Britain). Beyond the Quaker community, his preoccupation with Africa is highlighted, and further research is also encouraged reconciling Benezet studies with those on black rebels and founders in the Atlantic world.Early American history series ;Volume 5.AbolitionistsFranceBiographyAbolitionistsUnited StatesBiographyAntislavery movementsUnited StatesHistory18th centuryAntislavery movementsFranceHistory18th centuryPhiladelphia (Pa.)BiographyAbolitionistsAbolitionistsAntislavery movementsHistoryAntislavery movementsHistory326/.8092Rossignol Marie-JeanneVan Ruymbeke Bertrand1962-MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910815125903321The Atlantic world of Anthony Benezet (1713-1784)4064224UNINA03507oam 22004814a 450 991013671380332120190617074437.01-5064-1590-3(CKB)3710000000903826(EBL)4716863(MiAaPQ)EBC4716863(OCoLC)960977352(MdBmJHUP)muse52804(EXLCZ)99371000000090382620161014d2016 uy 0engur|n#||||||||rdacontentrdamediardacarrierThe Gospels and Acts Fortress Commentary on the Bible Study Edition /Margaret Aymer, Cynthia Briggs Kittredge, David A. Contributors from a rich diversity of perspectives connect historical-critical analysis with sensitivity to current theological, cultural, and interpretive issues. Introductory articles describe the challenges of reading the New Testament in ancient and contemporary contexts, as well as exploring other themes ranging from the Jewish heritage of early Christianity to the legacy of the Apocalyptic. These are followed by the survey "Jesus and the Christian Gospels." Each chapter (Matthew through Acts) includes an introduction and commentary on the text through the lenses of three critical questions: The Text in Its Ancient Context. What did the text probably mean in its original historical and cultural context? The Text in the Interpretive Tradition. How have centuries of reading and interpreting shaped our understanding of the text? The Text in Contemporary Discussion. What are the unique challenges and interpretive questions that arise for readers and hearers of the text today? The Gospels and Acts introduces fresh perspectives and draws students, as well as preachers and interested readers, into the challenging work of interpretation.Fortress commentary on the Bible.Electronic books. 226.07S{acute}anchez David A(David Arthur),1960-Kittredge Cynthia BriggsAymer Margaret P.MdBmJHUPMdBmJHUPBOOK9910136713803321The Gospels and Acts2986149UNINA
