Se carga y se descarga entre sistemas técnicos heterogéneos se descarga una llama para cargar un camión, se descarga un camión para cargar un bote -, de modo que estudiándolos se vuelve visible la diversidad de sistemas que intervienen y sus cadenas de relaciones. Esta operación plantea además el problema de los recipientes (vasijas, frascos, sacos, barriles) y códigos (volumen, precio, peso, viajes) que permiten traducir la materia de un sistema a otro y que sobrescriben formas locales de comprender, tratar y medir la naturaleza: la historia de la difusión del saco o del kilo en los Andes son problemas esenciales a una antropología de la naturaleza. En lo que respecta a la historia de la técnica, los puntos de carga y descarga hacen aparecer la realidad local de las máquinas: una máquina de vapor es universal, la misma en el desierto de Atacama que en Alemania, pero la manera como se la carga y descarga, en cambio, depende de su concretización en un espacio físico, social y cultural particular. Los sitios de carga y descarga son los puntos más políticos del sistema; ahí se instalan las aduanas, las pesas, los controles; también se roba o se engaña.
