Authorities' Response to the AssessmentThis paper discusses key findings of the Detailed Assessment of Compliance on the Basel Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision in South Africa. The South African banking system is highly concentrated with more than 90 percent of banking assets being controlled by the five largest banks. A suitable legal framework for banking supervision is in place to provide each responsible authority with the necessary legal powers to authorize banks, conduct ongoing supervision, address compliance with laws, and undertake timely corrective actions to address safety and soundness concerns. The responsibilities and objectives of each of the authorities involved in banking supervision are clearly defined in legislation and publicly disclosed.IMF Staff Country Reports; Country Report ;No. 2015/055Banks and bankingState supervisionSouth AfricaBanks and bankingState supervisionSouth AfricaEvaluationBanking lawSouth AfricaBanks and BankingimfPublic FinanceimfFinance: GeneralimfFinancial Risk ManagementimfCriminologyimfBanksimfDepository InstitutionsimfMicro Finance InstitutionsimfMortgagesimfFinancing PolicyimfFinancial Risk and Risk ManagementimfCapital and Ownership StructureimfValue of FirmsimfGoodwillimfPublic AdministrationimfPublic Sector Accounting and AuditsimfAuditingimfGeneral Financial Markets: Government Policy and RegulationimfFinancial Institutions and Services: Government Policy and RegulationimfInternational Financial MarketsimfBankingimfFinancial services law & regulationimfManagement accounting & bookkeepingimfFinanceimfCorporate crimeimfwhite-collar crimeimfExternal auditimfMarket riskimfCredit riskimfOperational riskimfPublic financial management (PFM)imfFinancial regulation and supervisionimfInternal auditimfBanks and bankingimfFinancial risk managementimfAuditing, InternalimfState supervisionimfFinancial services industryimfSouth AfricaimfBanks and bankingState supervisionBanks and bankingState supervisionBanking lawBanks and BankingPublic FinanceFinance: GeneralFinancial Risk ManagementCriminologyBanksDepository InstitutionsMicro Finance InstitutionsMortgagesFinancing PolicyFinancial Risk and Risk ManagementCapital and Ownership StructureValue of FirmsGoodwillPublic AdministrationPublic Sector Accounting and AuditsAuditingGeneral Financial Markets: Government Policy and RegulationFinancial Institutions and Services: Government Policy and RegulationInternational Financial MarketsBankingFinancial services law & regulationManagement accounting & bookkeepingFinanceCorporate crimewhite-collar crimeExternal auditMarket riskCredit riskOperational riskPublic financial management (PFM)Financial regulation and supervisionInternal auditBanks and bankingFinancial risk managementAuditing, InternalState supervisionFinancial services industry332.1DcWaIMFBOOK9910814010603321South Africa172791UNINA
