This book argues that this was because the political and social order could not be understood without considering the rituals and symbols that held the Empire together. What determined the rules (and whether they were followed) depended on complex symbolic-ritual actions. By examining key moments in the political history of the Empire, the author shows that it was a vocabulary of symbols, not the actual written laws, that formed a political language indispensable in maintaining the common order.Spektrum (New York, N.Y.)Political customs and ritesGermanyConstitutional historyHoly Roman EmpireHoly Roman EmpireCivilizationHoly Roman EmpireKings and rulersHoly Roman EmpireSymbolic representationcharlemagne.charles the great.charles v.constitutional history.coronation regalia.cultural sociology.early german history.early modern europe.engaging.european history.german studies.germany.government and governing.historical.holy roman empire.maximilian i.medieval europe.nobility.political history.political language.political process.political science.political structure.regensburg.rituals.royalty.social construction.social order.symbolic language.symbolic-ritual acts.symbols.Political customs and ritesConstitutional history943/.02Stollberg-Rilinger Barbara169536Dunlap Thomas1959-MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910797659803321The emperor's old clothes3834762UNINA
