Recommendations for Improved Disaster Preparedness, Response, and Recovery Efforts for Children and Youth; Notes; About the Authors and Series Editor; IndexWhen children experience upheaval and trauma, adults often view them as either vulnerable and helpless or as resilient and able to easily “bounce back.” But the reality is far more complex for the children and youth whose lives are suddenly upended by disaster. How are children actually affected by catastrophic events and how do they cope with the damage and disruption? Children of Katrina offers one of the only long-term, multiyear studies of young people following disaster. Sociologists Alice Fothergill and Lori Peek spent seven years after Hurricane Katrina interviewing and observing several hundred children and their family members, friends, neighbors, teachers, and other caregivers. In this book, they focus intimately on seven children between the ages of three and eighteen, selected because they exemplify the varied experiences of the larger group. They find that children followed three different post-disaster trajectories—declining, finding equilibrium, and fluctuating—as they tried to regain stability. The children’s moving stories illuminate how a devastating disaster affects individual health and well-being, family situations, housing and neighborhood contexts, schooling, peer relationships, and extracurricular activities. This work also demonstrates how outcomes were often worse for children who were vulnerable and living in crisis before the storm. Fothergill and Peek clarify what kinds of assistance children need during emergency response and recovery periods, as well as the individual, familial, social, and structural factors that aid or hinder children in getting that support.Katrina bookshelf.Hurricane Katrina, 2005Social aspectsChild disaster victimsLouisianaNew OrleansSocial conditionsChild disaster victimsLouisianaNew OrleansPsychological aspectsHurricane Katrina, 2005Social aspects.Child disaster victimsSocial conditions.Child disaster victimsPsychological aspects.363.34/922092530976335CU 3040rvkFothergill Alice1515613Peek Lori A.MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910797138903321Children of Katrina3751456UNINA01170nam a2200301 i 450099100041150970753620020509170115.0981110s1998 it ||| | ita b11353478-39ule_instPARLA207561ExLDip.to Scienze Storiche Fil. e Geogr.ita850.9Matarrese, Tina157039Stilistica, metrica e storia della lingua :studi offerti dagli allievi a Pier Vincenzo Mengaldo /a cura di Tina Matarrese ; Marco Praloran ; Paolo TrovatoPadova :Antenore,1998xxx, 440 p. ;25 cm.Medioevo e umanesimo ;97Lingua italiana - MetricaLingua italianaStoriaMengaldo, Pier VincenzoPraloran, MarcoTrovato, Paolo.b1135347801-03-1701-07-02991000411509707536LE009 MSM VII Coll.9/9712009000008274le009-E0.00-no 00000.i1153018201-07-02Stilistica, metrica e storia della lingua824459UNISALENTOle00901-01-98ma -itait 0101106nam2 22002893i 450 UR1000250320251003044432.020250512d1983 ||||0itac50 baitaitz01i xxxe z01nz01ncRDAcarrierˆ1: Lo ‰schema teorico e le qualificazioniEnzo CardiRiminiMaggioli1983218 p.24 cm.001CFI00150392001 ˆLa ‰manifestazione di interessi nei procedimenti amministrativiEnzo Cardi1Procedimento amministrativoFIRCFIC002420E342.45066PROCEDIMENTO AMMINISTRATIVO.
