Despite its short-term drama and immediate impact on people's lives, the 1906 earthquake and fire did not transform the history of San Francisco. Instead, San Franciscans rapidly incorporated the crisis into pre-existing debates about urban ecology, urban development, and social relations in the city. In the modern era, Americans have generally viewed 'natural' disasters as anomalous, exceptional events. Interpreting disasters as unpredictable 'acts of nature' that represent a disruption of ordinary life has justified a failure to adequately plan for disasters and concealed the ways in which social factors such as poverty play as much of a role in causing disasters as the geological or meteorological events that precipitate crises. By applying these insights to a close study of San Francisco's 1906 earthquake, including the decades leading up to the disaster and the city's recovery in the years after 1906, this project demonstrates how disaster and recovery became integrated into San Francisco's history, rather than transforming the city, and makes an important contribution to the interdisciplinary field of natural disaster studies"--Provided by publisher.Weyerhaeuser environmental book.Catastrophes naturellesAspect socialAspect environnementalÉtats-UnisSan Francisco (Calif.)20e siecleramCatastrophes naturellesAspect environnementalÉtats-UnisSan Francisco (Calif.)20e siecleramSeisme et incendie de San Francisco (1906)ramUrban ecology (Sociology)fast(OCoLC)fst01733718Social conditionsfast(OCoLC)fst01919811Natural disastersSocial aspectsfast(OCoLC)fst01034021Natural disastersEnvironmental aspectsfast(OCoLC)fst01033998Ecologyfast(OCoLC)fst00901476EarthquakesSocial aspectsfast(OCoLC)fst00900935EarthquakesEnvironmental aspectsfast(OCoLC)fst00900908Urban ecology (Sociology)CaliforniaSan FranciscoHistory20th centuryNatural disastersSocial aspectsCaliforniaSan FranciscoHistory20th centuryEarthquakesSocial aspectsCaliforniaSan FranciscoHistory20th centuryNatural disastersEnvironmental aspectsCaliforniaSan FranciscoHistory20th centuryEarthquakesEnvironmental aspectsCaliforniaSan FranciscoHistory20th centurySan Francisco Earthquake and Fire, Calif., 1906CaliforniaSan FranciscofastCaliforniafastSan Francisco (Calif.)Social conditions20th centurySan Francisco (Calif.)Environmental conditionsHistory20th centuryHistory.Catastrophes naturellesAspect socialAspect environnementalCatastrophes naturellesAspect environnementalSeisme et incendie de San Francisco (1906).Urban ecology (Sociology)Social conditions.Natural disastersSocial aspects.Natural disastersEnvironmental aspects.Ecology.EarthquakesSocial aspects.EarthquakesEnvironmental aspects.Urban ecology (Sociology)HistoryNatural disastersSocial aspectsHistoryEarthquakesSocial aspectsHistoryNatural disastersEnvironmental aspectsHistoryEarthquakesEnvironmental aspectsHistorySan Francisco Earthquake and Fire, Calif., 1906.979.461051Dyl Joanna L.aut1510570MdBmJHUPMdBmJHUPBOOK9910796502603321Seismic City3743337UNINA
