In The Japanese and the War, Michael Lucken details how World War II manifested in the literature, art, film, funerary practices, and education reform of the time. Concentrating on the years immediately before and after (1937 to 1952), Lucken explores the creation of an idea of Japanese identity that still resonates in everything from soap operas to the response to the Fukushima nuclear disaster.Lucken defines three distinct layers of Japan's memory of World War II: the population's expectations at the beginning, the trauma caused by conflict and defeat, and the politics of memory that arose after Japan lost to the Allied powers. Emphasizing Japanese-language sources, Lucken writes a narrative of the making of Japanese cultural memory that moves away from Western historical modes and perspectives. His approach also paints a new portrait of the U.S. occupation, while still maintaining a cultural focus. Lucken sets out to capture the many ways people engage with war, but particularly the full range of Japan's experiences, which, he argues, the Japanese state has yet to fully confront, leading to a range of tensions at home and abroad.World War, 1939-1945JapanHistoriographyCollective memoryJapanHistory20th centuryMemorySocial aspectsJapanHistory20th centuryWorld War, 1939-1945InfluenceWar and societyJapanHistory20th centuryJapanSocial conditions20th centuryJapanIntellectual life20th centuryWorld War, 1939-1945Historiography.Collective memoryHistoryMemorySocial aspectsHistoryWorld War, 1939-1945Influence.War and societyHistory940.5352Lucken Michael1092850Grimwade KarenMiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910792626003321The Japanese and the war3801384UNINA03752nam 22006733 450 991079538010332120211214151309.01-63742-160-5(CKB)4940000000616496(MiAaPQ)EBC6796732(Au-PeEL)EBL6796732(OCoLC)1283738235(OCoLC-P)1283738235(CaSebORM)9781637421604(EXLCZ)99494000000061649620211214d2021 uy 0engurcnu||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierFour Laws for the Artificially IntelligentFirst edition.New York :Business Expert Press,2021.©2021.1 online resource (294 pages)Big data, business analytics, and smart technology collection,2333-67571-63742-159-1 Cover -- Halftitle -- Title -- Copyright -- Description -- Contents -- Testimonials -- Preface -- Acknowledgments -- Part I: AI Seeks an Introduction -- Chapter 1: You Must Ask the Right Questions -- Chapter 2: Originality Consists in Returning to the Origin -- Part II: The First Law -- Chapter 3: Adaptation Is Not Imitation -- Chapter 4: How Big Is Big Data? -- Chapter 5: We Need AI to Tell Us Who We Are -- Part III: The Second Law -- Chapter 6: Don't Change the Goals, Adjust the Action Steps -- Chapter 7: Ethics Is Directed to Secure Inner Perfection -- Chapter 8: Bending Acts of Government to Selfish Purpose -- Part IV: The Third Law -- Chapter 9: A Price of Survival Under Stress Is Becoming Older -- Chapter 10: AI Must Pass Into Communication for Its Fulfillment -- Chapter 11: Old Dogma Screams at New Truth -- Part V: The Fourth Law -- Chapter 12: Culture Is the Sum of Human Behaviors -- Chapter 13: Bits Are Symbols for Concepts Communicated by AI -- Chapter 14: Process as Culture -- Part VI: AI Seeks Closure -- Chapter 15: Having an Affair With Your Own Image -- Chapter 16: A Machine for Grinding Out Conclusions -- Notes -- References -- About the Author -- Index -- Adpage -- Backcover.Four Laws for the Artificially Intelligent redefines possibilities and offers leverage to turn AI visions into reality.
