La variété des sources étudiées, épigraphiques, papyrologiques, archéologiques, littéraires, témoigne de l'ampleur que peut prendre un tel questionnement historique susceptible de renouveler radicalement la lecture de tel ou tel document supposé bien connu. Par ailleurs, les cadres normatifs observables dans les sociétés antiques, une fois mis au jour, paraissent sujets à bien des gauchissements, voire des transgressions. Ceux-ci rendent compte, à leur tour, de la dynamique des identités de genre qu'on ne saurait réduire à deux contenus, le masculin et le féminin.
