It contains eight empirically-based papers which examine individual stages of the grammaticalization path from its beginnings as a demonstrative to the definite article and beyond. Focusing on cognitive, pragmatic, semantic and syntactic factors, the contributions not only address the development from pragmatic to semantic definiteness, but also pertain to functional and formal changes starting as soon as the linguistic unit has acquired the function of marking semantic definiteness. Based on corpora spanning the entire history of the German language, from Old High German (750-1050) to present-day German, the analyses challenge the traditional linear model of grammaticalization and provide alternative pathways. What all the contributions have in common is the idea that the main grammaticalization path is accompanied or crossed by several side roads which lead to different destinations such as preposition-article-clitics, generic usages or onymic articles"--Provided by publisher.Studies in language variation ;Volume 23.German languageDefinitenessGerman languageGrammaticalizationGerman languageDefiniteness.German languageGrammaticalization.435.5Szczepaniak RenataFlick JohannaMiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910794182303321Walking on the grammaticalization path of the definite article3709937UNINA04249nam 2200685 a 450 991096112870332120200520144314.01-281-39987-6978661139987090-474-1014-910.1163/9789047410140(CKB)1000000000412703(SSID)ssj0000149145(PQKBManifestationID)11136663(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000149145(PQKBWorkID)10236577(PQKB)11713005(Au-PeEL)EBL3004063(CaPaEBR)ebr10234752(CaONFJC)MIL139987(OCoLC)923613033(OCoLC)568171780(nllekb)BRILL9789047410140(MiAaPQ)EBC3004063(EXLCZ)99100000000041270320060826d2006 uy 0engurcn|||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierEsoteric and exoteric aspects in Judeo-Arabic culture /edited by Benjamin Hary and Haggai Ben-Shammai1st ed.Leiden ;Boston Brill20061 online resource (xi, 338 pages)Etudes sur le judaisme medieval,0169-815X ;t. 33International conference proceedings, Emory University, 1999.90-04-15233-4 Includes bibliographical references and indexes.Intro -- TABLE OF CONTENTS -- INTRODUCTION --- Benjamin Hary and Haggai Ben-Shammai -- PHILOSOPHIC MYSTICISM: THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF MEDIEVAL JUDAISM --- David R. The title of this volume, Esoteric and Exoteric Aspects in Judeo-Arabic Culture highlights the theme running through many of the conference papers: the diversity and vitality of Judeo-Arabic culture. The volume represents the interdisciplinary nature of the field. There are articles on Jewish thought, philosophy and mysticism, language and linguistics, religious studies, intellectual and social history, law, biblical exegesis, and more. The book is an important contribution to our understanding of Judeo-Arabic society in the Middle Ages.Etudes sur le judaisme medieval ;t. 33.Judeo-Arabic literatureHistory and criticismCongressesJudeo-Arabic languageCongressesJewish lawCongressesJudaismCongressesJudeo-Arabic literatureHistory and criticismJudeo-Arabic languageJewish lawJudaism892.7/09Hary Benjamin H1835350Ben-Shammai Haggai1835351MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910961128703321Esoteric and exoteric aspects in Judeo-Arabic culture4411904UNINA
