Focusing on the representation of authors in narrative and iconographic texts, including novels, biographies, sketches and portrait galleries, Salmon traces the emergence of authorship as a new form of professional identity from the 1820s to the 1850s. Many first-generation Victorian writers, including Carlyle, Dickens, Thackeray, Martineau and Barrett-Browning, contributed to contemporary debates on the 'Dignity of Literature', professional heroism, and the cultural visibility of the 'man of letters'. This study combines a broad mapping of the early Victorian literary field with detailed readings of major texts. The book argues that the key model of professional development within this period is embodied in the narrative form of literary apprenticeship, which inspired such celebrated works as David Copperfield and Aurora Leigh, and that its formative process is the 'disenchantment of the author'.Cambridge studies in nineteenth-century literature and culture ;87.English literature19th centuryHistory and criticismAuthors in literatureLiterature and societyEnglandHistory19th centuryAuthors, English19th centuryEnglandIntellectual life19th centuryEnglish literatureHistory and criticism.Authors in literature.Literature and societyHistoryAuthors, English820.9/008Salmon Richard1965-763275UkCbUPUkCbUPBOOK9910790698003321Formation of the Victorian literary profession1548370UNINA03236nam 2200565I 450 991096918160332120190617112505.09781787439955178743995X97817874385831787438589(CKB)4100000008415754(MiAaPQ)EBC5787819(UtOrBLW)9781787438583(Perlego)954142(EXLCZ)99410000000841575420190617h20192019 uy 0engurun|||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierCultural journeys in higher education student voices and narratives /Jan Bamford, and Lucie Pollard1st ed.Bingley, UK :Emerald Publishing,2019.1 online resource (163 pages)Great debates in higher education9781787438590 1787438597 Includes bibliographical references and index.Prelims -- Introduction -- Bridging barriers -- Strangers in a new land -- 'Leaving culture at the classroom door' -- Strangers in your own land -- Culture and developing relationality in higher education -- Bibliography -- Index. The cultural diversity of university student populations can be seen to reflect the changing demographics of an increasingly international mobile workforce. The implications of the growing migrant population and differing communication patterns in the classroom is a highly under-researched area. Cultural Journeys in Higher Education provides a unique insight into the cultural experiences of university recounted through the students' narratives and voices. This book explores the increasingly culturally diverse composition of the student body and its impact on student learning. The need to negotiate differing cultural scripts and adapting to the new cultural landscape when students arrive at university are just a few of the experiences addressed within this important text. Cultural Journeys in Higher Education navigates the issue of curriculum delivery through the eyes of those who receive the education and questions whether a new approach is needed to adapt to an increasingly culturally diverse student body. The student experience is a central focus of this book, giving researchers, practitioners and leaders in education a unique perspective that will enable them to further understand the cultural framework that underpins Higher Education.
