Conclusion by way of afterword --References --Index.This book argues that the frontier, usually associated with the era of colonial conquest, has great, continuing and under explored relevance to the Caribbean region. Identifying the frontier as a moral, ideational and physical boundary between what is imagined as civilisation and wilderness, the book seeks to extend frontier analysis by focusing on the Eastern Caribbean multi-island state of St Vincent and the Grenadines. The continuing relevance of the concept of frontier, and allied notions of civilisation and wilderness, are illuminated through an analysis of the ways in which SVG is perceived and experienced by both outsiders to the society and its insiders. Using literary sources, biographies and autobiography, the book shows how St Vincent is imagined and made sense of as a modern frontier; a society in the balance between an imposed civilised order and an untameable wild that always encroaches, whether in the form of social dislocation, the urban presence of the ‘Wilderness people’ or illegal marijuana farming in the northern St Vincent hills. The frontier as examined here has historically been and remains very much a global production. Simultaneously, it is argued that contemporary processes of globalisation shape the development of tourism and finance sectors, as well as patterns of migration, they connect to shifting conceptions of the civilised and the wild, and have implications for the role of the state and politics in frontier societies.Theory for a global age.National characteristics, CaribbeanNational characteristics, Caribbean, in literatureBoundariesSocial aspectsBoundariesPhilosophyPopular cultureCaribbean AreaPostcolonialismCaribbean Areast vincentfrontiercaribbeanwildernessglobalisationcivilisationNational characteristics, Caribbean.National characteristics, Caribbean, in literature.BoundariesSocial aspects.BoundariesPhilosophy.Popular culturePostcolonialism306.09729Nanton Philip871421Manchester University Press,UkMaJRUBOOK996552360203316Frontiers of the Caribbean1945409UNISA03386nam 2200613Ia 450 991079023350332120221214165602.00-7486-5497-610.1515/9780748654970(CKB)2670000000203794(EBL)932474(OCoLC)795695209(SSID)ssj0000659397(PQKBManifestationID)11393066(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000659397(PQKBWorkID)10695221(PQKB)11496384(MiAaPQ)EBC932474(DE-B1597)616840(DE-B1597)9780748654970(OCoLC)1302164271(EXLCZ)99267000000020379420111220d2012 uy 0engur|n|---|||||txtccrThe Victorian gothic[electronic resource] an Edinburgh companion /edited by Andrew Smith and William HughesEdinburgh Edinburgh University Pressc20121 online resource (viii, 258 pages)Edinburgh Companions to the Gothic : ECGDescription based upon print version of record.1-322-98025-X 0-7486-4249-8 Includes bibliographical references and index.Introduction: Locating the Victorian Gothic; Chapter 1 Victorian Realism and the Gothic: Objects of Terror Transformed; Chapter 2 Sensation Fiction: A Peep Behind the Veil; Chapter 3 Victorian Gothic Pulp Fiction; Chapter 4 Victorian Gothic Drama; Chapter 5 Victorian Gothic Poetry: The Corpse's [a] Text; Chapter 6 The Victorian Ghost Story; Chapter 7 Victorian Gothic and National Identity: Cross-Channel 'Mysteries'; Chapter 8 The Victorian Gothic and Gender; Chapter 9 Queer Victorian Gothic; Chapter 10 Victorian Gothic Death; Chapter 11 Science and the Gothic; Chapter 12 Victorian Medicine and the Gothic; Chapter 13 Imperial Gothic; Chapter 14 Fin-de-siècle Gothic. These 14 chapters, each written by an acknowledged expert in the field, provide an invaluable insight into the complex and various Gothic forms of the nineteenth century.
