CONCLUSIONS""; ""References""Empirical studies of the impact of geography and institutions on growth and development at the international level have become common place, but the high degree of abstraction at that level has led to calls for subnational studies. This paper examines these issues for a region of the United States, Appalachia, where the specific factors at play are identified and measured thus obviating the need for instrumental variable techniques. The evidence suggests that initial conditions, including both geography and institutions, are very important for economic development, having significant effects lasting hundreds of years.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2006/169Economic developmentEconomic geographyEconometricsimfMacroeconomicsimfPublic FinanceimfPoverty and HomelessnessimfWelfare, Well-Being, and Poverty: GeneralimfPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their DistributionsimfEstimationimfTaxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: GeneralimfEconometric Modeling: GeneralimfPoverty & precarityimfEconometrics & economic statisticsimfPublic finance & taxationimfPovertyimfPersonal incomeimfEstimation techniquesimfInstitutional arrangements for revenue administrationimfSpatial modelsimfEconometric modelsimfIncomeimfRevenueimfUnited StatesimfEconomic development.Economic geography.EconometricsMacroeconomicsPublic FinancePoverty and HomelessnessWelfare, Well-Being, and Poverty: GeneralPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their DistributionsEstimationTaxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: GeneralEconometric Modeling: GeneralPoverty & precarityEconometrics & economic statisticsPublic finance & taxationPovertyPersonal incomeEstimation techniquesInstitutional arrangements for revenue administrationSpatial modelsEconometric modelsIncomeRevenueRomero-Barrutieta Alma1558656Clifton Eric1558657DcWaIMFBOOK9910788689703321Institutions versus Geography3823231UNINA
