CONCLUSIONS""; ""REFERENCES""Intermediation spreads in Latin America are high by international standards. This paper examines the determinants of bank interest margins in that region using bank and country-level data from 85 countries, including 14 Latin American economies. The results suggest that Latin America has higher interest rates, less efficient banks, and larger reserve requirements than other regions and that these factors have a significant impact on spreads. However, Latin American countries do not differ markedly from their peers in other aspects that are found important in determining the cost of financial intermediation, such as inflation and bank profit taxation.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2006/044Banks and bankingLatin AmericaInterest ratesLatin AmericaBanks and BankingimfFinance: GeneralimfMoney and Monetary PolicyimfPublic FinanceimfInterest Rates: Determination, Term Structure, and EffectsimfFinancial Markets and the MacroeconomyimfBanksimfDepository InstitutionsimfMicro Finance InstitutionsimfMortgagesimfEconomywide Country Studies: Latin AmericaimfCaribbeanimfMonetary PolicyimfGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)imfTaxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: GeneralimfBankingimfMonetary economicsimfFinanceimfPublic finance & taxationimfReserve requirementsimfDeposit ratesimfCompetitionimfLegal support in revenue administrationimfMonetary policyimfFinancial marketsimfFinancial servicesimfRevenue administrationimfEmerging and frontier financial marketsimfBanks and bankingimfInterest ratesimfRevenueimfFinancial services industryimfBrazilimfBanks and bankingInterest ratesBanks and BankingFinance: GeneralMoney and Monetary PolicyPublic FinanceInterest Rates: Determination, Term Structure, and EffectsFinancial Markets and the MacroeconomyBanksDepository InstitutionsMicro Finance InstitutionsMortgagesEconomywide Country Studies: Latin AmericaCaribbeanMonetary PolicyGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)Taxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: GeneralBankingMonetary economicsFinancePublic finance & taxationReserve requirementsDeposit ratesCompetitionLegal support in revenue administrationMonetary policyFinancial marketsFinancial servicesRevenue administrationEmerging and frontier financial marketsBanks and bankingInterest ratesRevenueFinancial services industryGelos Gaston1465377International Monetary Fund.Western Hemisphere Dept.DcWaIMFBOOK9910788412503321Banking Spreads in Latin America3802261UNINA
