In this paper, we construct an industry-level dataset for the United States, by combining information on the number of temporary work visas with data on lobbying activity associated with immigration. We find robust evidence that both pro- and anti-immigration interest groups play a statistically significant and economically relevant role in shaping migration across sectors. Barriers to migration are lower in sectors in which business interest groups incur larger lobby expenditures and higher in sectors where labor unions are more important.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2008/244LobbyingUnited StatesEconometric modelsLaborimfMacroeconomicsimfPublic FinanceimfEmigration and ImmigrationimfInternational MigrationimfNational Government Expenditures and Related Policies: GeneralimfLabor Economics: GeneralimfUnemployment: Models, Duration, Incidence, and Job SearchimfLabor-Management Relations, Trade Unions, and Collective Bargaining: GeneralimfMigration, immigration & emigrationimfPublic finance & taxationimfLabourimfincome economicsimfTrade unionsimfMigrationimfExpenditureimfUnemployment rateimfLabor unionsimfEmigration and immigrationimfExpenditures, PublicimfLabor economicsimfUnemploymentimfUnited StatesEmigration and immigrationGovernment policyEconometric modelsUnited StatesimfLobbyingEconometric models.LaborMacroeconomicsPublic FinanceEmigration and ImmigrationInternational MigrationNational Government Expenditures and Related Policies: GeneralLabor Economics: GeneralUnemployment: Models, Duration, Incidence, and Job SearchLabor-Management Relations, Trade Unions, and Collective Bargaining: GeneralMigration, immigration & emigrationPublic finance & taxationLabourincome economicsTrade unionsMigrationExpenditureUnemployment rateLabor unionsEmigration and immigrationExpenditures, PublicLabor economicsUnemployment324.40973Mishra Prachi1090676Facchini Giovanni1493489Mayda Anna Maria1493490DcWaIMFBOOK9910788343803321Do Interest Groups Affect U.S. Immigration Policy3716489UNINA
