Using data on 145 banks in 11 oil-exporting MENA countries for 1994-2008, we test hypotheses of direct and indirect effects of oil price shocks on bank profitability. Our results indicate that oil price shocks have indirect effect on bank profitability, channeled through country-specific macroeconomic and institutional variables, while the direct effect is insignificant. Investment banks appear to be the most affected ones compared to Islamic and commercial banks. Our findings highlight systemic implications of oil price shocks on bank performance and underscore their importance for macroprudential regulation purposes in MENA countries.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2009/220Petroleum productsPricesMiddle EastEconometric modelsPetroleum productsPricesAfrica, NorthEconometric modelsBanks and bankingMiddle EastEconometric modelsBanks and bankingAfrica, NorthEconometric modelsBanks and BankingimfFinance: GeneralimfMacroeconomicsimfIslamic Banking and FinanceimfInflationimfBanksimfDepository InstitutionsimfMicro Finance InstitutionsimfMortgagesimf'Panel Data ModelsimfSpatio-temporal Models'imfEnergy: Demand and SupplyimfPricesimfGeneral Financial Markets: Government Policy and RegulationimfFinancing PolicyimfFinancial Risk and Risk ManagementimfCapital and Ownership StructureimfValue of FirmsimfGoodwillimfOther Economic Systems: Public EconomicsimfFinancial EconomicsimfPrice LevelimfDeflationimfFinanceimfBankingimfFinancial services law & regulationimfOil pricesimfBank soundnessimfCredit riskimfIslamic bankingimfFinancial sector policy and analysisimfFinancial regulation and supervisionimfFinancial servicesimfBanks and bankingimfFinancial risk managementimfIslamic countriesimfSaudi ArabiaimfPetroleum productsPricesEconometric models.Petroleum productsPricesEconometric models.Banks and bankingEconometric models.Banks and bankingEconometric models.Banks and BankingFinance: GeneralMacroeconomicsIslamic Banking and FinanceInflationBanksDepository InstitutionsMicro Finance InstitutionsMortgages'Panel Data ModelsSpatio-temporal Models'Energy: Demand and SupplyPricesGeneral Financial Markets: Government Policy and RegulationFinancing PolicyFinancial Risk and Risk ManagementCapital and Ownership StructureValue of FirmsGoodwillOther Economic Systems: Public EconomicsFinancial EconomicsPrice LevelDeflationFinanceBankingFinancial services law & regulationOil pricesBank soundnessCredit riskIslamic bankingFinancial sector policy and analysisFinancial regulation and supervisionFinancial servicesBanks and bankingFinancial risk managementIslamic countriesHesse Heiko1472688Poghosyan Tigran1476622International Monetary Fund.Middle East and Central Asia Dept.DcWaIMFBOOK9910788225003321Oil Prices and Bank Profitability3741554UNINA
