The Letters of Menakhem-Mendl and Sheyne-Sheyndl portrays a tumultuous marriage through letters exchanged between the title character, an itinerant bumbler seeking his fortune in the cities of Russia before departing alone for the New World, and his scolding wife, who becomes increasingly fearful, jealous, and mystified. Motl, Peysi the Cantor's Son is the first-person narrative of a mischievous and keenly observant boy who emigrates with his family from Russia to America. The final third of the story takes place in New York, making this Sholem Aleichem's only major work to be set in the United States. Motl and Menakhem-Mendl are in one sense opposites--the one a clear-eyed child and the other a pathetically deluded adult. Yet both are ideal conveyors of the comic disparity of perception on which humor depends. If Motl sees more than do others around him, Menakhem-Mendl has an almost infinite capacity for seeing less. Sholem Aleichem endows each character with an individual comic voice to tell in his own way the story of the collapse of traditional Jewish life in modern industrial society as well as the journey to America, where a new chapter of Jewish history begins. This volume includes a biographical and critical introduction as well as a useful glossary for English-language readers.New Yiddish library.Letters of Menakhem-Mendl and Sheyne-Sheyndl ; and, Motl, the cantor's sonRELIGION / Judaism / GeneralbisacshElectronic books.RELIGION / Judaism / General.839/.133Sholem Aleichem1859-1916.612128Halkin Hillel1939-1029269Sholem Aleichem1859-1916.612128MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910451980303321The letters of Menakhem-Mendl and Sheyne-Sheyndl2479239UNINA03006nam 2200541 450 991078759140332120230803030544.01-78084-255-4(CKB)2670000000391292(EBL)1179637(OCoLC)851970661(SSID)ssj0001599922(PQKBManifestationID)16306832(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001599922(PQKBWorkID)14892451(PQKB)10347448(MiAaPQ)EBC1179637(Au-PeEL)EBL1179637(EXLCZ)99267000000039129220220517d2013 uy 0engur|n|---|||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierCritical care in acute liver failure /editors, Roger Williams, Julia Wendon1st ed.London, England :Future Medicine Ltd.,[2013]©20131 online resource (vi, 177 pages) coloured illustrationsDescription based upon print version of record.1-78084-257-0 Definition, pattern of disease and prognosis / William Bernal -- Histopathological basis of syndrome / Alberto Quaglia & Bernard Portmann -- Worldwide differences in acute liver failure / Shalimar, Subrat K.
