Although he had achieved international prominence as a surgeon, he was unhappy in his personal life and deeply frustrated by a failed attempt to introduce medicare to Canada. An uncompromising humanitarian in search of a cause, Bethune became immersed in the Spanish Civil War. In Bethune in Spain, Roderick Stewart and Jesús Majada recount Bethune's achievements in Spain and the events that led to his decision to assist the Loyalist forces. The narrative contains Bethune's letters and reports, some of them reproduced here for the first time, as well as newspaper articles, and interviews with him. It covers his creation and operation of a mobile blood transfusion unit, his rescue of fleeing Loyalist civilians during the Malaga-Almeria road tragedy, and his efforts to aid children orphaned by the War. It also deals with the gruelling public-speaking tour Bethune undertook on his return to Canada in 1937 to plead for intervention in support of democracy in Spain and to raise awareness of atrocities committed against civilians by the fascist-backed Spanish Nationalists. Illustrated with photographs from Bethune's seven months in Spain, Bethune in Spain is a poignant portrait of an early advocate for universal health care, an unwavering communist, and a crusader for the Spanish Republican cause.PhysiciansCanadaBiographyPhilanthropistsCanadaBiographyCommunistsCanadaBiographyGeneral SurgeryCanadaBiographySpainHistoryCivil War, 1936-1939Participation, CanadianSpainHistoryCivil War, 1936-1939Medical careSpainDescription and travelPhysiciansPhilanthropistsCommunistsGeneral Surgery617.09Stewart Roderick1470395Majada Neila JesúsMiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910786834903321Bethune in Spain3682185UNINA03778nam 2200457 450 991079992290332120230817191731.01-315-16637-21-351-67981-3(CKB)4100000007653435(MiAaPQ)EBC5683723(NjHacI)994100000007653435(EXLCZ)99410000000765343520190226d2019 uy 0engurcnu||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierPocket guide to bacterial infections /editors, K. This book will present the role of various bacterial pathogens affecting the host system. The book is to be organized flexibly so that chapters and topics are arranged with continuity from the former chapters. Each chapter has been made as self-contained as possible to promote this flexibility. This book will discuss each of the virulence properties of the bacteria with reference to their interacting hosts in a larger perspective. Kwey selling features: Summarizes the role various bacterial pahtogens affect the host system Reviews recent advances for combating different types of bacterial infections that infect different body parts Designed as an effective teaching and research tool providing up to date information on bacterial infections Defines important terms Written in a readable and direct writing style.Pocket guides to biomedical sciences.Bacterial diseasesBacterial diseases.616.9/2Balamurugan K(Krishnaswamy),Udayakumar PrithikaMiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910799922903321Pocket guide to bacterial infections3874809UNINA
