Renewing the American Radical Tradition -- BIBLIOGRAPHY -- INDEXThis is a major work of history and political theory that traces radical democratic thought in America across the twentieth century, seeking to recover ideas that could reenergize democratic activism today. The question of how citizens should behave as they struggle to create a more democratic society has haunted the United States throughout its history. Should citizens restrict themselves to patient persuasion or take to the streets and seek to impose change? Marc Stears argues that anyone who continues to wrestle with these questions could learn from the radical democratic tradition that was forged in the twentieth century by political activists, including progressives, trade unionists, civil rights campaigners, and members of the student New Left. These activists and their movements insisted that American campaigners for democratic change should be free to strike out in whatever ways they thought necessary, so long as their actions enhanced the political virtues of citizens and contributed to the eventual triumph of the democratic cause. Reevaluating the moral and strategic arguments, and the triumphs and excesses, of this radical democratic tradition, Stears contends that it still offers a compelling account of citizen behavior--one that is fairer, more inclusive, and more truly democratic than those advanced by political theorists today.DemocracyUnited StatesRadicalismUnited StatesPolitical movementsUnited StatesPolitical activistsUnited StatesUnited StatesSocial conditionsUnited StatesPolitics and governmentElectronic books.DemocracyRadicalismPolitical movementsPolitical activists320.530973Stears Marc905194MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910139362603321Demanding democracy2490656UNINA04348nam 2201009Ia 450 991078638550332120211028012904.00-520-95148-410.1525/9780520951488(CKB)2670000000350725(EBL)1172736(SSID)ssj0000871387(PQKBManifestationID)11467403(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000871387(PQKBWorkID)10820428(PQKB)11589093(DE-B1597)520108(OCoLC)841908796(DE-B1597)9780520951488(Au-PeEL)EBL1172736(CaPaEBR)ebr10687981(CaONFJC)MIL478868(MiAaPQ)EBC1172736(EXLCZ)99267000000035072520130122d2013 uy 0engurnn#---|u||utxtccrDown by the bay[electronic resource] San Francisco's history between the tides /Matthew Morse BookerBerkeley University of California Press20131 online resource (295 p.)Description based upon print version of record.0-520-27320-6 Includes bibliographical references and index.Front matter --Contents --Illustrations --Acknowledgments --INTRODUCTION. Rising Tides? --Notes --Bibliography --IndexSan Francisco Bay is the largest and most productive estuary on the Pacific Coast of North America. It is also home to the oldest and densest urban settlements in the American West. Focusing on human inhabitation of the Bay since Ohlone times, Down by the Bay reveals the ongoing role of nature in shaping that history. From birds to oyster pirates, from gold miners to farmers, from salt ponds to ports, this is the first history of the San Francisco Bay and Delta as both a human and natural landscape. It offers invaluable context for current discussions over the best management and use of the Bay in the face of sea level rise.Land useCaliforniaSan FranciscoHistoryLand useCaliforniaSan Francisco Bay AreaHistoryNatureEffect of human beings onCaliforniaSan FranciscoHistoryNatureEffect of human beings onCaliforniaSan Francisco Bay AreaHistoryHuman ecologyCaliforniaSan FranciscoHistoryHuman ecologyCaliforniaSan Francisco Bay AreaHistorySan Francisco (Calif.)HistorySan Francisco Bay Area (Calif.)HistorySan Francisco (Calif.)Environmental conditionsSan Francisco Bay Area (Calif.)Environmental conditionsamerican west.bayshore.california ecology.california environment.california history.cities and environment.climate change.conservation and development.ecological historians.ecology and climate change.environment conservation.environmental history.environmental protection.environmentalism.global warming.going green.history of san francisco.nature conservation.pacific coast.san francisco estuary.san francisco tidelands.urban development and environment.us history.westward expansion.Land useHistory.Land useHistory.NatureEffect of human beings onHistory.NatureEffect of human beings onHistory.Human ecologyHistory.Human ecologyHistory.979.4/61Booker Matthew Morse1968-1506164MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910786385503321Down by the bay3736253UNINA01792nam0 22004093i 450 CFI024265020251003044137.0881400421819931027d1985 ||||0itac50 baitaitz01i xxxe z01nz01ncRDAcarrierLa denunzia di nuova opera(art. 1171 Cod. civ. e 688 a 691 Cod. proc. civ.)Mario Dini5. ed. rielaborataampliata ed aggiornataMilanoA.
