But from Sophus Reinert's perspective, eighteenth-century political economy can be understood only in the context of the often brutal imperial rivalries then unfolding in Europe and its former colonies and the positive consequences of active economic policy. The idea of economic emulation was the prism through which philosophers, ministers, reformers, and even merchants thought about economics, as well as industrial policy and reform, in the early modern period. With the rise of the British Empire, European powers and others sought to selectively emulate the British model. In mapping the general history of economic translations between 1500 and 1849, and particularly tracing the successive translations of the Bristol merchant John Cary's seminal 1695 Essay on the State of England, Reinert makes a compelling case for the way that England's aggressively nationalist policies, especially extensive tariffs and other intrusive market interventions, were adopted in France, Italy, Germany, and Scandinavia before providing the blueprint for independence in the New World. Relatively forgotten today, Cary's work served as the basis for an international move toward using political economy as the prime tool of policymaking and industrial expansion.Reinert's work challenges previous narratives about the origins of political economy and invites the current generation of economists to reexamine the foundations, and future, of their discipline.EconomicsEuropeHistory18th centuryEnlightenmentEuropePhilosophy, European18th centuryEuropeIntellectual life18th centuryEconomicsHistoryEnlightenmentPhilosophy, European330.1094MD 1800rvkReinert Sophus A792474MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910781992603321Translating empire3785355UNINA03831oam 2200937 450 991082088240332120201013103937.01-84779-706-71-78170-314-01-84779-449-1(CKB)2560000000085710(EBL)1069698(OCoLC)818847493(SSID)ssj0001552309(PQKBManifestationID)16171873(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001552309(PQKBWorkID)14812762(PQKB)10329418(SSID)ssj0000712793(PQKBManifestationID)12296311(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000712793(PQKBWorkID)10651419(PQKB)10749746(StDuBDS)EDZ0000086895(MiAaPQ)EBC1069698(Au-PeEL)EBL1069698(CaPaEBR)ebr10627218(CaONFJC)MIL843774(OCoLC)1100883656(MdBmJHUP)musev2_78502(UkMaJRU)992976236737501631(DE-B1597)659898(DE-B1597)9781847794499(EXLCZ)99256000000008571020120523h20092009 fy 0engur||#||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierJack Rosenthal /Sue ViceManchester, UK :Manchester University Press,2009.Manchester, UK :Manchester University Press,[2013]©20091 online resource (viii, 202 pages) digital file(s)The television seriesDescription based upon print version of record.0-7190-8811-9 0-7190-7704-4 Includes bibliographical references and index.Copyright; Contents; General editors' preface; Acknowledgements; Introduction; 1. His career began with Coronation Street in the 1960's and he became famous for his popular sitcoms, including The Lovers and The Dustbinmen. During what is often known as the 'golden age' of British television drama, Rosenthal wrote such plays as The Knowledge, The Chain, Spend, Spend, Spend and P'tang, Yang, Kipperbang, as well as the pilot for the series London's Burning.
