Barnum's Joice Heth hoax to examine the contours of race relations in the antebellum North. Barnum's first exhibit as a showman, Heth was an elderly enslaved woman said to be the 161-year-old former nurse of the infant George Washington. Seizing upon the novelty, the newly emerging commercial press turned her act--and especially her death--into one of the first media spectacles in American history.Popular cultureUnited StatesHistory19th centuryEnslaved womenUnited StatesBiographyFreak showsSocial aspectsUnited StatesHistory19th centuryWhite peopleRace identityUnited StatesAfrican Americans in popular cultureHistory19th centuryRacism in popular cultureUnited StatesHistory19th centuryDeath in popular cultureUnited StatesHistory19th centuryNortheastern StatesRace relationsPopular cultureHistoryEnslaved womenFreak showsSocial aspectsHistoryWhite peopleRace identityAfrican Americans in popular cultureHistoryRacism in popular cultureHistoryDeath in popular cultureHistory306/.0973/09034Reiss Benjamin1498482MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910781142303321The showman and the slave3724047UNINA05278nam 2200913 a 450 991095482850332120251001182326.00-309-21575-71-283-37632-697866133763290-309-21573-0(CKB)2550000000075340(EBL)3378904(SSID)ssj0000595469(PQKBManifestationID)11334434(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000595469(PQKBWorkID)10556160(PQKB)10549390(MiAaPQ)EBC3378904(Au-PeEL)EBL3378904(CaPaEBR)ebr10520713(CaONFJC)MIL337632(OCoLC)923284731(EXLCZ)99255000000007534020120114d2011 uy 0engurcn|||||||||txtccrImproving health literacy within a state workshop summary /Maria Hewitt, rapporteur ; Institute of Medicine of the National Academies1st ed.Washington, D.C. According to Health Literacy: A Prescription to End Confusion (IOM, 2004), nearly half of all American adults--90 million people--have inadequate health literacy to navigate the healthcare system. To address issues raised in that report, the Institute of Medicine convened the Roundtable on Health Literacy, which brings together leaders from the federal government, foundations, health plans, associations, and private companies to discuss challenges facing health literacy practice and research and to identify approaches to promote health literacy in both the public and private sectors. On November 30, 2010, the roundtable cosponsored a workshop with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Anderson School of Management in Los Angeles. Improving Health Literacy Within a State serves as a summary of what occurred at the workshop. The workshop focused on understanding what works to improve health literacy across a state, including how various stakeholders have a role in improving health literacy. The focus of the workshop was on presentations and discussions that address (1) the clinical impacts of health literacy improvement approaches; (2) economic outcomes of health literacy implementation; and (3) how various stakeholders can affect health literacy"--Publisher's description.Health educationUnited StatesCongressesPatient educationUnited StatesCongressesCommunication in medicineUnited StatesTelecommunication in medicineUnited StatesTelecommunication in medicineConsumer Health Information(DNLM)D054626Communication Barriers(DNLM)D003144Educational Status(DNLM)D004522Health Educationmethods(DNLM)D006266Q000379Health Educationstandards(DNLM)D006266Q000592Telemedicine(DNLM)D017216Remote Consultation(DNLM)D019144United StatesCongressHealth educationPatient educationCommunication in medicineTelecommunication in medicineTelecommunication in medicine.Consumer Health InformationCommunication BarriersEducational StatusHealth EducationmethodsHealth EducationstandardsTelemedicineRemote Consultation613.0712Hewitt Maria1472895Institute of Medicine (U.S.)Institute of Medicine (U.S.).Roundtable on Health Literacy.Institute of Medicine (U.S.).Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice.Understanding what works in health literacy across a State: A Workshop(2010 :Los Angeles, CA).MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910954828503321Improving health literacy within a state4435659UNINA
