He provides a concise overview of the topic, including a set of recommendations for officers and defense officials. In eight brisk chapters, Blair shows how established democracies can --and why they should --take full advantage of their points of contact to move dictatorships toward democracy. He explores the potential for democratic armed forces to influence change both in dictatorships like Iran and North Korea and transitioning countries such as Egypt, Kazakhstan and Burma. Recent events in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya demonstrated that the way in which the military responds to calls for democratic change is crucial in shaping the outcome of potential transitions. What is less understood, however, is the potential role of outside influence in such situations --specifically, how military officers and defense officials in the United States and other democracies can use their relationships with military officers in transitioning countries to improve the prospects for democracy. Under the leadership of Admiral Dennis Blair, the Council for a Community of Democracies has developed a project to inform, guide, and strengthen democratic transitions. They describe how the democracies can prepare ahead of time and respond quickly and effectively in a time of crisis. This project establishes a knowledge base and set of recommendations for military officers and defense officials to support democratic movements.Armed ForcesCivic actionArmed ForcesPolitical activityDemocracyCivil-military relationsMilitary relationsPolitics and warWorld politics21st centuryArmed ForcesCivic action.Armed ForcesPolitical activity.Democracy.Civil-military relations.Military relations.Politics and war.World politics322/.5Blair Dennis C1504640Council for a Community of Democracies,MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910779413803321Military engagement3733756UNINA04137nam 2200817 a 450 991081984390332120240516150728.01-283-85762-63-11-174039-03-11-022773-810.1515/9783110227734(CKB)2480000000005143(EBL)893995(OCoLC)796384301(SSID)ssj0000677460(PQKBManifestationID)12239282(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000677460(PQKBWorkID)10693648(PQKB)10197047(MiAaPQ)EBC893995(DE-B1597)38555(OCoLC)1013949263(OCoLC)1037980297(OCoLC)1041974026(OCoLC)1043627470(OCoLC)881293289(DE-B1597)9783110227734(Au-PeEL)EBL893995(CaPaEBR)ebr10582210(CaONFJC)MIL417012(EXLCZ)99248000000000514320120206d2012 uy 0engur|n|---|||||txtccrErgativity, valency and voice /edited by Gilles Authier, Katharina Haude1st ed.Berlin ;Boston De Gruyter Moutonc20121 online resource (396 p.)Empirical approaches to language typology,0933-761X ;48Description based upon print version of record.3-11-022772-X Includes bibliographical references and indexes. The sample of languages represented in these descriptive contributions covers most of the geographical areas and linguistic families in which ergativity has been known to exist jointly with well-developed morphological voice, and some languages belonging to families in which ergativity or voice were not previously recognized or adequately described up to now.Empirical approaches to language typology ;48.Grammar, Comparative and generalErgative constructionsGrammar, Comparative and generalVoiceGrammar, Comparative and generalSyntaxGenerative grammarErgativity.Language Typology.Valency.Grammar, Comparative and generalErgative constructions.Grammar, Comparative and generalVoice.Grammar, Comparative and generalSyntax.Generative grammar.415415ES 480rvkAuthier Gilles1662231Haude Katharina1601380MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910819843903321Ergativity, valency and voice4018751UNINA
