It illustrates the ways in which Hardy represents a social world which serves as a ‘horizon’ for the individual and explores the dialectic between the perceptible world and human consciousness. Ebbatson demonstrates how, in Hardy’s oeuvre, modern life becomes alienated from its roots in rural life – individual freedom is achieved in works like Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Jude the Obscure or The Woodlanders at the cost of personal insecurity and a deepening sense of homelessness. However, this development occurs against the marginalisation of dialect forms of speech. This book also explores how Hardy’s impressionist vision serves to undermine the prevailing conventions of plot structure. Roger Ebbatson is Visiting Professor at Lancaster University and Emeritus Professor at University of Worcester, UK. He is the author of numerous books, including Literature and Landscape (2013) and Landscapes of Eternal Return (2016).FictionLiterature, Modern19th centuryEuropean literaturePoetryFiction LiteratureNineteenth-Century LiteratureEuropean LiteraturePoetry and PoeticsFiction.Literature, ModernEuropean literature.Poetry.Fiction Literature.Nineteenth-Century Literature.European Literature.Poetry and Poetics.809.3Ebbatson Rogerauthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut166676BOOK9910760273603321Perception, Class and Environment in the Works of Thomas Hardy4334890UNINA02835nam 2200673 a 450 991095388680332120240516002716.097866131645371-283-16453-10-19-984614-60-19-970527-5(CKB)2560000000298765(SSID)ssj0000523945(PQKBManifestationID)12213178(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000523945(PQKBWorkID)10543172(PQKB)10542854(StDuBDS)EDZ0000076166(Au-PeEL)EBL3054210(CaPaEBR)ebr10480766(CaONFJC)MIL316453(OCoLC)638331156(OCoLC)1453053288(FINmELB)ELB165931(MiAaPQ)EBC3054210(EXLCZ)99256000000029876520090714d2010 uy 0engur|||||||||||txtccrThe logic of discipline global capitalism and the architecture of government /Alasdair Roberts1st ed.Oxford ;New York Oxford University Press20101 online resource (xii, 201 p.)Bibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph0-19-537498-3 0-19-977684-9 Includes bibliographical references and index.Cover -- Contents -- Figures -- 1.
