By the 1990's, however, its revolutionary political model had collapsed, degenerating into a savage conflict between the military and Islamist guerillas that killed some 200,000 citizens. In this lucid and gripping account, Martin Evans and John Phillips explore Algeria's recent and very bloody history, demonstrating how the high hopes of independence turned into anger as young Algerians grew increasingly alienated. Unemployed, frustrated by the corrupt military regime, and excluded by the West, the post-independence generation needed new heroes, and some found them in Osama bin Laden and the rising Islamist movement. Evans and Phillips trace the complex roots of this alienation, arguing that Algeria's predicament-political instability, pressing economic and social problems, bad governance, a disenfranchised youth-is emblematic of an arc of insecurity stretching from Morocco to Indonesia. Looking back at the pre-colonial and colonial periods, they place Algeria's complex present into historical context, demonstrating how successive governments have manipulated the past for their own ends. The result is a fractured society with a complicated and bitter relationship with the Western powers-and an increasing tendency to export terrorism to France, America, and beyond.Islam and politicsAlgeriaAlgeriaHistory1962-1990AlgeriaHistory1990-Electronic books.Islam and politics965.05Evans Martin1964-1053041Phillips John499780MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910452811003321Algeria2484684UNINA02068nam 22005773u 450 991045595580332120210114062953.01-280-92294-X97866109229490-9771455-1-40-585-43859-5(CKB)111056487029182(EBL)225705(OCoLC)437144542(SSID)ssj0000238160(PQKBManifestationID)12048276(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000238160(PQKBWorkID)10221990(PQKB)10335840(SSID)ssj0000081935(PQKBManifestationID)11110767(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000081935(PQKBWorkID)10134567(PQKB)10992671(MiAaPQ)EBC225705(EXLCZ)9911105648702918220130418d2003|||| u|| |engur|n|---|||||txtccrStrauss's SALOME[electronic resource]Miami Opera Journeys Publishing20031 online resource (96 p.)Description based upon print version of record.1-930841-80-9 Salome/Opera Classics Library Series; Title Page; Contents; a prelude; Provenance; Principal Characters in Salome; Brief Story Synopsis; Story Narrative with Music Highlight Examples; Commentary and Analysis; Libretto; Discography; Videography; Dictionary of Opera and Musical TermsA comprehensive guide to Richard Strauss's SALOME, featuring insightful and in depth Commentary and Analysis, a complete, newly translated Libretto with German/English side-by side, and over 25 music highlight examples.Strauss, RichardElectronic books.Strauss, Richard.782.1/0268Fisher Burton D849438AU-PeELAU-PeELAU-PeELBOOK9910455955803321Strauss's SALOME2026935UNINA02157oam 2200493 450 991070735360332120160810103322.0(CKB)5470000002463982(OCoLC)953791223(OCoLC)995470000002463982(EXLCZ)99547000000246398220160720d2015 ua 0engur|||||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierDetermination of pesticides and pesticide degradates in filtered water by direct aqueous-injection liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry /by Mark W.
