Après un premier volume traitant des fouilles de l’avenue Adolphe Max, à Lyon Saint-Jean, voici celui consacré au pont de la Guillotière. La réalisation des sections Gabriel Péri-Bellecour, comportant le forage d’un tunnel sous le Rhône, a en effet été l’occasion d’une redécouverte des vestiges du vieux "pont du Rhosne". Rares sont aujourd’hui les Lyonnais qui, empruntant ce trajet, savent que ce fut là, jusqu’au XVIIIe siècle, l’unique ouvrage permettant de franchir le Rhône. L’importance vitale de cette liaison pour la ville est à l’origine, dès le XIIe siècle, d’une impressionnante entreprise pour établir, puis maintenir le pont contre les assauts d’un fleuve impétueux dont les crues annuelles menaçaient d’emporter piles et arches. C’est toute cette aventure de la lutte de l’homme et du fleuve qui est retracée ici par les chercheurs de l’équipe pluridisciplinaire chargée de l’opération. Les données archéologiques et géomorphologiques recueillies sur le terrain, étayées par une série inédite de datations dendrochronologiques, sont confrontées à la riche documentation conservée aux archives municipales et départementales. Les phases successives de réfection du monument, font l’objet de restitutions architecturales attrayantes.
