The present volume in French is devoted to the study of Buddhist communities in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). It first deals with modern monasteries and the diverse elements that constitute them: temple (vihāra), stūpa, bodhi tree, sermon hall, library, residential buildings, ritual aedicules, classrooms and hermitages; it also briefly examines ancient Sinhalese monasteries with a view to furnishing some points of comparison. It then proceeds to study the modern iconography of Sinhalese Buddhism (Buddha, Bodhisattva, disciples, diverse gods and other characters) and image worship.
