It sketches the careers, and highlights of some of the work, of 65 people, most of them statisticians. What gives the book its special character is its emphasis on the author's interaction with these people and the inclusion of many personal anecdotes. Combined, these portraits provide a panoramic view of statistics during the period in question. Included are discussions of such topics as nonparametrics, Bayesian approaches, and data analysis. The stress is on ideas and technical material is held to a minimum. Thus the book is accessible to anyone with at least an elementary background in statistics. Erich L. Lehmann is Professor Emeritus of Statistics at the University of California at Berkeley. He is a member of the American and National Academies, a former Editor of the Annals of Mathematical Statistics, and former President of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. He holds honorary degrees from the University of Chicago and University of Leiden, and was awarded the Wilks and Noether prizes. He is also the author of Testing Statistical Hypotheses, Theory of Point Estimation, and Elements of Large-Sample Theory, all published by Springer. Le manuscrit édité ici (B.N. Paris, 12572) se trouvait en effet dans la bibliothèque de ce grand seigneur en 1467. Il avait été commandé auparavant par un bibliophile du Nord, Jean de Wavrin. Un autre manuscrit (Arsenal 5208), copie sur parchemin pour Charles de Croÿ, nous a transmis ce roman. C’est cependant l’exemplaire de Jean de Wavrin que nous avons choisi de présenter ici car, plus que l’autre, il est tourné vers le Nord. Par ailleurs, copié sur papier, il est décoré de miniatures originales – dessins à la plume aquarellés – qui ne manquent pas de charme et permettent de reconnaître un artiste qui travailla souvent pour Jean de Wavrin. La source de ce roman est un charmant poème courtois du xive siècle. Le Dit du Prunier, qui raconte comment un jeune homme, oublie sa naissance noble et vit avec les paysans jusqu’au moment où, amoureux d’une dame, il devient un brillant chevalier. Au xve siècle cette histoire est mise en prose et allongée par des descriptions de combats, tournois et pas, dans le goût de l’époque. Cédant à la tentation du régionalisme, l’auteur prend également plaisir à décrire la jeunesse de son héros, évoque les veillées campagnardes et insère au cœur du récit courtois quelques détails pittoresques. Proche de la chronique, ce roman emprunte également ses péripéties à l’actualité du xve siècle, aux rêves de croisades et aux expéditions en Espagne, aux affrontements avec les Anglais, etc. La littérature d’imagination prend alors volontiers pour cadre les rêves des grands seigneurs bourguignons.
