Ont-ils remplacé systématiquement les dieux locaux, tant dans les villes que dans les campagnes ? Ont-ils été intégrés dans les panthéons locaux avec les divinités indigènes ? Dans quelle mesure pouvons-nous parler d’interpretatio romana, voire gallica, hispanica… Mais que faut-il entendre par interpretatio ? Ce terme semble impliquer une assimilation pure et simple. Le phénomène est en réalité plus complexe et l’approche du phénomène de l’interpretatio demande beaucoup de prudence. Dans certaines régions de l’Occident, nous constatons la persistance de pratiques cultuelles indigènes et de nombreuses divinités locales non interprétées tout au long de l’époque romaine. L’acculturation s’accompagne ainsi d’une persistance de l’identité religieuse de ces peuples très attachés à leurs traditions ancestrales. Le domaine religieux est un bon indicateur du niveau de romanisation ou d’intégration des peuples dans le monde romain. Les cultes officiels montrent bien ce niveau « d’adaptation », et donc d’intégration des élites. Mais qu’en est-il des couches inférieures de la population voire des ruraux ? Le conservatisme est-il seulement le fait de ces couches populaires ou des régions isolées, peu urbanisées ou tardivement conquises ?
