La plupart ignorent cependant que les descendants de ceux qui ont construit ces merveilles vivent toujours dans la région. À Cancún même, dans cette ville créée de toutes pièces pour le loisir et la villégiature, les Mayas sont aujourd'hui ouvriers de la construction ou employés d'hôtel, vendeurs de glaces ou cireurs de chaussures. Ils ont souvent passé directement d'un mode de vie traditionnel, basé sur la milpa - la culture sur brûlis en forêt -, à une économie du secteur tertiaire. Lucie Dufresne, qui étudie les Mayas du Yucatán depuis 1980, trace ici le portrait de cette communauté en évolution. Elle raconte leur histoire, en évoquant entre autres la Guerre des castes, cette guérilla indienne qui a persisté jusqu'au début du XXe siècle. Elle rappelle que, bien avant la ratification de l'ALENA, le Yucatán était déjà lié par son économie au reste de l'Amérique du Nord, auquel il fournissait deux matières premières importantes : le henequén, qui servait à fabriquer la corde pour les moissonneuses-batteuses, et le chiclé, à l'origine du chewing-gum. Lucie Dufresne décrit enfin, à partir d'enquêtes sur le terrain, l'impact de l'industrie touristique sur les paysans mayas de l'intérieur et les migrations qui en résultent.
