Character’s Conduct -- Notes -- Index -- About the Author From the patricians of the early republic to post-Reconstruction racial scientists, from fin de siècle progressivist social reformers to post-war sociologists, character, that curiously formable yet equally formidable “stuff,” has had a long and checkered history giving shape to the American national identity.Bodies of Reform reconceives this pivotal category of nineteenth-century literature and culture by charting the development of the concept of “character” in the fictional genres, social reform movements, and political cultures of the United States from the mid-nineteenth to the early-twentieth century. By reading novelists such as Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Pauline Hopkins, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman alongside a diverse collection of texts concerned with the mission of building character, including child-rearing guides, muscle-building magazines, libel and naturalization law, Scout handbooks, and success manuals, James B. Salazar uncovers how the cultural practices of representing character operated in tandem with the character-building strategies of social reformers. His innovative reading of this archive offers a radical revision of this defining category in U.S. literature and culture, arguing that character was the keystone of a cultural politics of embodiment, a politics that played a critical role in determining-and contesting-the social mobility, political authority, and cultural meaning of the raced and gendered body.America and the long 19th century.American fiction19th centuryHistory and criticismCharacter in literatureCharacters and characteristics in literatureNational characteristics, American, in literatureCharacterPolitical aspectsUnited StatesHistory19th centuryRhetoricPolitical aspectsUnited StatesHistory19th centuryPolitical cultureUnited StatesHistory19th centuryPolitics and literatureUnited StatesHistory19th centuryElectronic books.American fictionHistory and criticism.Character in literature.Characters and characteristics in literature.National characteristics, American, in literature.CharacterPolitical aspectsHistoryRhetoricPolitical aspectsHistoryPolitical cultureHistoryPolitics and literatureHistory823/.809353Salazar James B1038763MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910458315703321Bodies of reform2460542UNINA02690nam 2200409 450 991057686090332120230502132408.0(CKB)5860000000051469(NjHacI)995860000000051469(EXLCZ)99586000000005146920230502d2022 uy 0engur|||||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierBeing Single in India Stories of gender, exclusion, and possibility /Sarah LambOakland, California :University of California Press,2022.©20221 online resource (236 pages)Ethnographic studies in subjectivity ;Volume 150-520-38942-5 Includes bibliographical references and index.Introduction : thinking outside marriage -- On being single -- Education and work -- A daughter's and sister's care -- Who will care for me? -- Sexuality and love -- Never-married single moms -- Pleasure, friendships, and fun -- Conclusion."Today, the majority of the world's population lives in a country with falling marriage rates, a phenomenon with profound impacts on women, gender, and sexuality. In this exceptionally crafted ethnography, Sarah Lamb probes the gendered trend of single living in India, examining what makes living outside marriage for women increasingly possible and yet incredibly challenging. Featuring the stories of never-married women as young as 35 and as old as 92, the book offers a remarkable portrait of a way of life experienced by women across class and caste divides, from urban professionals and rural day laborers, to those who identify as heterosexual and lesbian, to others who evaded marriage both by choice and by circumstance. For women in India, complex social-cultural and political-economic contexts are foundational to their lives and decisions, and evading marriage is often an unintended consequence of other pressing life priorities. Arguing that never-married women are able to illuminate their society's broader social-cultural values, Lamb offers a new and startling look at prevailing systems of gender, sexuality, kinship, freedom, and social belonging in India today"-- Provided by publisher.Ethnographic studies in subjectivity ;Volume 15.Being Single in India Gender identityGender identity.305.3Lamb Sarah1251967NjHacINjHaclBOOK9910576860903321Being Single in India2902343UNINA02376nam 22006495 450 991026111170332120231116154911.03-11-089493-910.1515/9783110894936(CKB)3390000000034188(SSID)ssj0001055770(PQKBManifestationID)11585601(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001055770(PQKBWorkID)11019349(PQKB)10761011(MiAaPQ)EBC3042787(DE-B1597)54863(OCoLC)1013950449(OCoLC)853257828(DE-B1597)9783110894936(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/44919(EXLCZ)99339000000003418820190708d2013 fg gerurcnu||||||||txtccrDeutschlands aktuelle Verfassungslage Berichte und Diskussionen auf der Sondertagung der Vereinigung der Deutschen Staatsrechtslehrer in Berlin am 27.
