Quant au « Parfait négociant », il serait par essence cosmopolite. En réaction, l’étude des circulations interroge la matérialité des échanges et des « processus de communication ». Elle prête une attention toute particulière aux infrastructures (routes, réseaux postaux, vecteurs d’information et de communication), à l’environnement des échanges (relations internationales), à l’espace et aux territoires (cartographie, maillages et réseaux), indissociables de l’étude des acteurs, des objets mobilisés et des institutions concernées. Aux circulations démographiques, commerciales, manufacturières, aux mobilités des négociants, des migrants, des diasporas, s’associent des circulations internationales artistiques, culturelles, diplomatiques, philosophiques, politiques, religieuses, savantes, techniques, qui mobilisent l’espace européen à des degrés et rayons variables.
