The many setbacks from the clinical trials of broad-spectrum MMP inhibitors for cancer indications in the late 1990s emphasized the extreme complexity of the participation of these proteolytic enzymes in biology. This editorial mini-review summarizes the Special Issue, which includes four review articles and 10 original articles that highlight the versatile roles of MMPs, ADAMs, and ADAMTSs, in normal physiology as well as in neoplastic and destructive processes in tissue. In addition, we briefly discuss the unambiguous involvement of MMPs in wound healing.Research & information: generalbicsscBiology, life sciencesbicsschemagglutinin-Btranswell co-culturesmatrix metalloproteinasesTNF-αmatrix metalloproteinaseperitoneal mesothelial cellgastric cancermetastatic disseminationMT4-MMPcancerdiseasesaggrecanaggrecanaseADAMTScartilagearthritisMMP-2MMP-9inhibitorallodyniacaspase-3neuropathicpaindorsal root ganglionspinal nerve ligationtuberculosistuberculous meningitisHIV-TB-associated IRISextracellular matrix breakdownadultpediatriclungcentral nervous systemmatrix-metalloproteinasemonocytesinflammationphagocytosisapoptosisblood samplinganticoagulantshigh-molecular-weight heparinIL-16sICAM-1IL-8T cellsa disintegrin and metalloproteinaseEMMPRINCD147ectodomain sheddingMMPsPTMsglycosylationphosphorylationglycosaminoglycansinterleukinIL-6IL-11trans-signalingmetalloproteasesADAMMMPmeprinmatrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)proteasesignalinginvasionchemokinecytokineproteomicsinterferonAgkistrodon venommetalloproteinasefibrinogenantithromboticmetabolomicsextracellular matrixcytokinesproteinasesinterstitial collagenswound healingResearch & information: generalBiology, life sciencesÅgren Magnus Sedt1309861Keller UlrichedtÅgren Magnus SothKeller UlrichothBOOK9910557717203321Matrix Metalloproteinase3029672UNINA
