It follows in the footsteps of three high-profile SHEL-based collections of peer-reviewed research papers and point-counterpoint commentaries. In the current volume, the editors invited contributors to reflect upon their approaches and practices in undertaking historical studies, focusing particularly on the methods deployed in selecting and analyzing data. The essays in this volume represent interests in the study of linguistic change in English that range across different periods, genres, and aspects of the language and show different approaches and use of evidence to deal with the subject. They also represent the current state of research in the field and the nature of the debates in which scholars and historians engage as regards the nature of the evidence adduced in the explanation of change and the robustness of heuristics. The editors share a strong interest in examining the evidence that informs and grounds research in their fields at the same time as interrogating the heuristics employed by their colleagues for the histories they present. The contributions to the volume give expression to these interests. Contributors are: Richard Hogg (to whose memory the volume is dedicated), William Labov, Elizabeth Traugott, Rob Fulk, Thomas Cable, Jennifer Tran-Smith, Charles Li, Christina Fitzgerald, David Denison, Christopher Palmer, Don Chapman, Graeme Trousdale, Joan Beal, Connie Eble, Stefan Dollinger and Raymond Hickey. The volume is of interest to scholars and postgraduate and research students in the history of English, English philology, and (English) historical linguistics.Topics in English linguistics ;61.Studies in the history of the English language 4Studies in the history of the English language fourEmpirical and analytical advances in the study of English language changeEnglish languageHistoryEnglish languageGrammar, HistoricalEnglish/language.historical linguistics.English languageHistory.English languageGrammar, Historical.420.9Fitzmaurice Susan M624737Minkova Donka1944-175201MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910782791903321Studies in the history of the English language IV3755062UNINA01698nas 2200433 n 450 99000888769040332120240229084300.00001-9909000888769FED01000888769(Aleph)000888769FED01000888769CNRP 0005041720161109a19449999km-y0itaa50------baengGBauu--------African affairs1944-LondonOxford University PressTrimestrale2001Journal of the Royal African Society2001African affairs (London. We would all like to live in a safe house that will not collapse on us. We would all like to walk on a safe road and never see a chasm open in front of us. We would all like to cross a bridge and reach the other side safely. We all would like to feel safe and secure when taking a plane, ship, train, or using any equipment. All this may be possible with the adoption of adequate manufacturing processes, with non-destructive inspection of final parts and monitoring during the in-service life of components. Above all, maintenance should be imperative. This requires effective non-destructive testing techniques and procedures. This Special Issue is a collection of some of the latest research in these areas, aiming to highlight new ideas and ways to deal with challenging issues worldwide. Different types of materials and structures are considered, different non-destructive testing techniques are employed with new approaches for data treatment proposed as well as numerical simulations. This can serve as food for thought for the community involved in the inspection of materials and structures as well as condition monitoring.History of engineering and technologybicsscadaptive thresholdaluminum alloy wheelbasalt fiberschaotic behaviorcomposite damagecomposite laminatecompositescross-ply fiber reinforced compositedamage assessmentDamage Indexdebondingdefectdefect detectiondefect localizationdelaminationdiffuse ultrasonic wavesdiscrete defectselectromagnetic detectionelectromechanical impedanceFEM simulationFinite Element Methodfrescoed surfaceshistorical masonry buildingimage enhancementimpact damageimpact hammer testinfrared thermography testingLamb wavelaser ultrasonic imaginglock-in thermographymagnetic flux densitymorphological reconstructionn/anon-destructive damage detectionnon-destructive inspectionnon-destructive testnon-destructive testing evaluationnon-destructive testsnondestructive testingnondestructive testing (NDT)optical detectionPassive Magnetic Inspection (PMI)phased array ultrasonicpiezoelectricplaster detachmentpolyamidepolypropyleneprobability paper methodrebarrecurrence plot (RP)recurrence quantification analysis (RQA)reinforce concreteresidual propertiesreviewself-magnetic behaviorsignal sensitivitystatistical resultssteel wire ropesthick multilayer compositesultrasonic guided waveultrasonic pulse echoultrasonic testingX-rayHistory of engineering and technologyMeola Carosenaedt149857Meola CarosenaothBOOK9910557301203321Nondestructive Testing in Composite Materials3019089UNINA
