D’emblée, ceux-ci la considèrent comme à la fois étrangère et ancestrale. Ce paradoxe est examiné à partir de quatre dossiers qu’éclairent des découvertes et des recherches récentes. Le premier est consacré aux galles, dévots de la déesse qui se châtrent à l’imitation d’Attis, frappé de folie par la déesse. Le deuxième vise à éclairer les identités et fonctions de la Grande Mère des dieux. La question complexe des mystères de la déesse est ensuite étudiée, ainsi que leur rapport avec le taurobole, cérémonie particulière durant laquelle les testicules du taureau sacrifié font l’objet de manipulations. Enfin, le culte de Mater Magna est analysé à partir de la documentation abondante qu’offre le cadre particulier d’Ostie, port de Rome.
