The collapse of the Abbey's tower in 1825 transformed the name Fonthill into a symbol for overarching ambition and folly, a sublime ruin. Fonthill is, however, much more than the story of one man's excesses. Beckford's Abbey is only one of several important houses to be built on the estate since the early sixteenth century, all of them eventually consumed by fire or deliberately demolished, and all of them oddly forgotten by historians. Little now remains: a tower, a stable block, a kitchen range, some dressed stone, an indentation in a field. 'Fonthill Recovered' draws on histories of art and architecture, politics and economics to explore the rich cultural history of this famous Wiltshire estate. The first half of the book traces the occupation of Fonthill from the Bronze Age to the twenty-first century. Some of the owners surpassed Beckford in terms of their wealth, their collections, their political power and even, in one case, their sexual misdemeanours. They include Charles I's Chancellor of the Exchequer, and the richest commoner in the nineteenth century. The second half of the book consists of essays on specific topics, filling out such crucial areas as the complex history of the designed landscape, the sources of the Beckfords' wealth and their collections, and one essay that features the most recent appearance of the Abbey in a video game.Intellectual lifeIntellectual life.136.4973Dakers Caroline1023057NjHacINjHaclBOOK9910678578503321Fonthill Recovered2430395UNINA03417nam 22007215 450 991049455430332120251113194753.03-030-82472-110.1007/978-3-030-82472-3(CKB)4100000011999822(DE-He213)978-3-030-82472-3(MiAaPQ)EBC6703036(Au-PeEL)EBL6703036(PPN)257350454(EXLCZ)99410000001199982220210727d2021 u| 0engurnn#008mamaatxtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierAdvances in Databases and Information Systems 25th European Conference, ADBIS 2021, Tartu, Estonia, August 24–26, 2021, Proceedings /edited by Ladjel Bellatreche, Marlon Dumas, Panagiotis Karras, Raimundas Matulevičius1st ed. 2021.Cham :Springer International Publishing :Imprint: Springer,2021.1 online resource (XXI, 289 p. 84 illus., 51 illus. in color.)Information Systems and Applications, incl. The 18 full papers presented together with 3 keynotes were carefully reviewed and selected from 70 submissions. The selected papers span a wide spectrum of topics in databases and related technologies, tackling challenging problems and presenting inventive and efficient solutions. They are organized in 5 sessions: patterns and events, social media and text mining, indexes, queries and constraints, high-dimensional data and data streams, and data integration.Information Systems and Applications, incl.
