L’insertion d’exemples dans un texte « de réflexion » (le terme « dissertation » est ici employé dans un sens générique, il ne réfère pas spécifiquement à la dissertation littéraire) instaure dans l’écriture une tension qui pose problème aux élèves : comment débattre d’idées générales s’il faut aussi les ancrer dans du particulier ? Après avoir analysé le genre dissertatoire (notamment dans ses rapports controversés avec l’argumentation) et présenté quelques champs théoriques qui ont à faire avec l’exemple (de la rhétorique aristotélicienne aux sciences cognitives), l’ouvrage propose une théorie de l’exemplification comme opération discursive, en la spécifiant au niveau des organisations textuelles et de l’emploi de certains marqueurs (comme et par exemple). Ce parcours théorique conduit à mieux percevoir les difficultés des élèves, tantôt cognitives (gestion des contenus, compréhension des énoncés de sujets), tantôt linguistiques et discursives (fonction textuelle et rôle argumentatif des exemples, emploi des marqueurs). L’ouvrage se termine par la présentation et l’analyse critique d’une séquence didactique, construite pour une classe de seconde. Le bilan de ce travail, mené d’un point de vue praxéologique, permet de mettre en évidence deux modalités d’apprentissage assez nettement différenciées, ce qui aboutit à interroger la pertinence des prescriptions scolaires visant traditionnellement l’obligation d’exemplifier. La méthodologie utilisée est celle de l’analyse de corpus textuels, elle met en œuvre l’hypothèse que les dysfonctionnements repérables dans les textes des apprenants sont des traces d’opérations psycho-cognitives spécifiques à la production écrite.
