But in the nineteenth century, the degree of fraud and corruption in America approached that of today's most corrupt developing nations, as municipal governments and robber barons alike found new ways to steal from taxpayers and swindle investors. In Corruption and Reform, contributors explore this shadowy period of United States history in search of better methods to fight corruption worldwide today. Contributors to this volume address the measurement and consequences of fraud and corruption and the forces that ultimately led to their decline within the United States. They show that various approaches to reducing corruption have met with success, such as deregulation, particularly "free banking," in the 1830's. In the 1930's, corruption was kept in check when new federal bureaucracies replaced local administrations in doling out relief. Another deterrent to corruption was the independent press, which kept a watchful eye over government and business. These and other facets of American history analyzed in this volume make it indispensable as background for anyone interested in corruption today.National Bureau of Economic Research conference report.CorruptionUnited StatesHistoryCongressesPolitical corruptionUnited StatesHistoryCongressesCorporationsCorrupt practicesUnited StatesHistoryCongressesCorruptionUnited StatesPreventionHistoryCongressescorrupt, reformer, change, economy, economics, finance, financial, wealth, income, money, history, historical, academic, scholarly, research, united states, usa, america, american, international, global, scandal, taboo, 19th, century, fraud, government, stealing, theft, taxpayer, investor, deregulation, banking, 1800s, 1900s, 20th, analysis, urban, laws, legal.CorruptionHistoryPolitical corruptionHistoryCorporationsCorrupt practicesHistoryCorruptionPreventionHistory364.1/323/0973Glaeser Edward L(Edward Ludwig),1967-324152Goldin Claudia Dale128928National Bureau of Economic Research.MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910777319803321Corruption and reform3849883UNINA05911nam 22008175 450 991048304550332120251226200007.03-540-30185-210.1007/b104334(CKB)1000000000212663(SSID)ssj0000098392(PQKBManifestationID)11137764(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000098392(PQKBWorkID)10132779(PQKB)10870205(DE-He213)978-3-540-30185-1(MiAaPQ)EBC3068298(PPN)134123565(EXLCZ)99100000000021266320100715d2005 u| 0engurnn|008mamaatxtccrAdvances in Data Mining Applications in Image Mining, Medicine and Biotechnology, Management and Environmental Control, and Telecommunications; 4th Industrial Conference on Data Mining, ICDM 2004, Leipzig, Germany, July 4-7, 2004, Revised Selected Papers /edited by Petra Perner1st ed. 2005.Berlin, Heidelberg :Springer Berlin Heidelberg :Imprint: Springer,2005.1 online resource (VIII, 176 p.) The mission of the conference is to bring together researchers and people from industry in order to discuss together new trends and applications in data mining. This year a broad spectrum of work of different applications was presented ranging from image mining, medicine and biotechnology, management and environmental control, to telecommunications. Besides that an industrial exhibition showed the successful application of data mining methods by industries in different areas such as medical devices, mass data management systems, data mining tools, etc. During the discussion many projects were inspired leading to new and joint work. The fruitful discussions, the exchange of ideas and the spirit of the conference made it a remarkable event for both sides, industry and research. We would like to express our appreciation to the reviewers for their precise and highly professional work. We appreciate the help and understanding of the editorial staff at Springer and in particular Alfred Hofmann, who supported the publication of these proceedings in the LNAI series. Last, but not least, we wish to thank all speakers, participants and industrial exhibitors who contributed to the success of the conference. We are looking forward to welcoming you to ICDM 2005 (www.data-mini- forum.de) and to the new work you will present there.Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence,2945-9141 ;3275Artificial intelligenceComputer scienceDatabase managementComputers and civilizationComputer visionInformation technologyManagementArtificial IntelligenceComputer ScienceDatabase ManagementComputers and SocietyComputer VisionComputer Application in Administrative Data ProcessingArtificial intelligence.Computer science.Database management.Computers and civilization.Computer vision.Information technologyManagement.Artificial Intelligence.Computer Science.Database Management.Computers and Society.Computer Vision.Computer Application in Administrative Data Processing.006.3Perner Petra564935Institut für Bildverarbeitung und Angewandte Informatik (Leipzig, Germany)Industrial Conference on Data Mining.MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910483045503321Advances in data mining4188485UNINA
