Sa noblesse est abondante et souvent populeuse. Elle présente de fortes disparités géographiques, entre la Normandie occidentale et la Normandie orientale, et il existe de visibles contrastes sociaux entre les élites aristocratiques et la plèbe nobiliaire qui peuple les campagnes de l’ouest de la province, souvent mise à mal économiquement.
