Extraordinary in his capacity for cultural and linguistic adjustment, he directed productions in twelve countries, always adapting shows to make them meaningful to local audiences. Notably, Bennewitz conducted stagings of Goethe's Faust in four different languages over a series of seven productions - three in pre-unification Weimar, one in the reunited Germany, and one each in New York, Manila, and Mumbai. The first comprehensive account of Bennewitz's remarkable career, Bennewitz, Goethe, Faust is also a pioneering study of intercultural interpretations of Faust. David G. John brings to light previously unknown archival materials - including annotated playbooks, correspondence, translations, videos, and reception information - as well as unpublished production photos from the stagings discussed in the book. Bennewitz, Goethe, Faust makes a cogent argument for this director's place alongside the twentieth century's greatest theatre innovators.German and European studies.TheaterGermanyHistory20th centuryIntercultural communication in the performing artsGermanyTheatrical producers and directorsGermanyBiographyElectronic books.TheaterHistoryIntercultural communication in the performing artsTheatrical producers and directors792.02/33092John David Gethin1947-969823MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910451976803321Bennewitz, Goethe, Faust2204341UNINA03225nam 2200673 a 450 991045795620332120200520144314.01-4696-1903-21-4696-0252-0(CKB)2550000000073837(EBL)825146(OCoLC)769101854(SSID)ssj0000550939(PQKBManifestationID)11341240(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000550939(PQKBWorkID)10525587(PQKB)11151183(MiAaPQ)EBC825146(OCoLC)966898555(MdBmJHUP)muse48567(Au-PeEL)EBL825146(CaPaEBR)ebr10518908(CaONFJC)MIL930361(EXLCZ)99255000000007383720110527d2011 uy 0engur|||||||nn|ntxtccrArmed with abundance[electronic resource] consumerism and soldiering in the Vietnam War /Meredith H. By contrast, in Armed with Abundance, Meredith Lair focuses on the noncombat experiences of U.S. soldiers in Vietnam, redrawing the landscape of the war so that swimming pools, ice cream, visits from celebrities, and other ""comforts"" share the frame with combat. To address a tenuous morale situation, military authorities, Lair reveals, wielded abundance to insulate soldiers--and, by extension, the American public--from boredom and deprivation, making the project of war perhaps easierSoldiersUnited StatesSocial life and customs20th centuryLifestylesUnited StatesHistory20th centuryConsumption (Economics)Social aspectsUnited StatesHistory20th centuryVietnam War, 1961-1975Social aspectsUnited StatesMoral conditionsHistory20th centuryElectronic books.SoldiersSocial life and customsLifestylesHistoryConsumption (Economics)Social aspectsHistoryVietnam War, 1961-1975Social aspects.959.704/31Lair Meredith H1027968MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910457956203321Armed with abundance2443765UNINA
