As David E. Hayes-Bautista explains, the holiday is not Mexican at all, but rather an American one, created by Latinos in California during the mid-nineteenth century. Hayes-Bautista shows how the meaning of Cinco de Mayo has shifted over time-it embodied immigrant nostalgia in the 1930's, U.S. patriotism during World War II, Chicano Power in the 1960's and 1970's, and commercial intentions in the 1980's and 1990's. Today, it continues to reflect the aspirations of a community that is engaged, empowered, and expanding.United States -- History -- Civil War, 1861-1865 -- Social aspectsHispanic AmericansHistory19th centuryCaliforniaHispanic AmericansEthnic identityCaliforniaCinco de Mayo (Mexican holiday)Social aspectsUnited StatesPuebla, Battle of, Puebla de Zaragoza, Mexico, 1862Social aspectsUnited StatesPuebla, Battle of, Puebla de Zaragoza, Mexico, 1862Press coverageUnited StatesPuebla, Battle of, Puebla de Zaragoza, Mexico, 1862-Electronic books.United States -- History -- Civil War, 1861-1865 -- Social aspects.Hispanic AmericansHistoryHispanic AmericansEthnic identityCinco de Mayo (Mexican holiday)Social aspectsPuebla, Battle of, Puebla de Zaragoza, Mexico, 1862Social aspectsPuebla, Battle of, Puebla de Zaragoza, Mexico, 1862Press coveragePuebla, Battle of, Puebla de Zaragoza, Mexico, 1862-394.262Hayes-Bautista Davidauthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut1037069DE-B1597DE-B1597BOOK9910457886903321El Cinco de Mayo2457771UNINA
